I did something really stupid

I'm watching a live stream and I saw in the chat I saw a little survey pop up pertaining to what the video was about. My dumb ass clicked on it. Before I knew it my display was blinking black a couple times and then my pc restarted. It came back up and I immediately did a search on my c drive for the date and went to the approximate time that it happened to see if there were any new files that didn't look right. Nothing. I ran a scan in defender. Nothing. I also have an adblocker that is supposed to have real time protection with it for malware and ransomware and malicious websites. That didn't do anything either. I pull youtube back up and within minutes it starts locking up. I was able to close it before a full crash. Tried it a couple times with the same result. I'm really hating myself because RIGHT before that survey popped up in the chat, I noticed someone spamming and I saw a ton of the same character coming through over and over out of the corner of my eye. I didn't think anything of it and maybe 30 seconds later regular chat is scrolling and up come this survey. I didn't put two and two together until it was too late. How stupid of me. Anyway, youtube won't stop crashing. Any suggestions on how to figure out what happened and how to stop it?

Download Malwarebytes free, and do a scan for starters.  If you still have issues, I'd think about reinstalling Windows after a wipe.

Honestly, you have a good load of protections already but without knowing which Ad Blocker... can't know fully.  I just know that Malwarebytes is consistently really damn good so it's worth using with Defender.

I would have said you were fine, but the Youtube issues constantly say otherwise.  Worth reinstalling Windows vs risking some shit hiding and waiting to grab something important.

Yep. Nothing. My screen flashed once during the scan. Yeah I don't want that to happen. I didn't even know that could happen in a youtube chat. So pissed at myself for clicking on it. It just didn't register.

Oh yeah, I have totaladblock on this pc

Boot into windows safe mode to do the scan. That is usually safer than just running it while your are in normal mode.

That's good news. I should only have capital one shopping and totaladblock. I'll clear everything and see what happens. What does stopping acceleration do?

Looks like I have a system restore point from yesterday too I'll try before doing a reinstall.

It seems that clearing the data has maybe worked. I've seen the screen flash twice but you're tube has not crashed since. It hasn't flashed in a bit yet either. Should I see it flash again I suppose I'll use the restore point. I've done things that I don't want to have to redo since that point is why I'm holding off. I think if something was stolen from me it prob was when it happened. Hopefully anyway. Another thought I had was to remove the browser and reinstall as no other programs seem to be effected. If I do that will Microsoft keep all the settings and bookmarks?

You will need to back up all your bookmarks.  I use Firefox and there is a way also to save your profile so when you reinstall everything is transferred over.  It's pretty straight forward to do this and Firefox help explains it.  I don't know about other browsers.

If it's not a virus. What would cause drive errors on c:  I googled it but Google doesn't know the context in which I acquired these errors. I thought I'm going to finish the video I was on and then use the restore point. Well it crashed again. Reboot and try to restore. Drive errors. That's supposedly fixed now and I'm going to try and restore. Then reinstall the browser looking for as much back up as poss first if that still doesn't do it.

I was in task sched yesterday after this restore point which is why I didn't want to use it. Anyway, I'm thinking it would be a good idea to have a restore point created everyday. There has to be a way to sched that task in task sched right

I know what you mean. Is that the name of it? Symantec endpoint protection or is that what some program does? What does ghostery do too?

I'd nix that idea and just pay for multi pack of Malwarebytes.

If you don't think Windows Defender is good enough, my go-to recommendation for third party antivirus is Sophos. Their home product is zero-cost, relatively unobtrusive, and uses the same definitions and engine as their commercial product.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I'm fine with defender. I had a horrible experience getting all traces of McAfee off a pc once the free year ended so I haven't used anything like that since. When this happened I was suggested malwarebytes. They let you use the full version for the trial but it didn't find anything so I took it off. I have webshield that came with total adblock and it didn't do it's job either. I'm not in a position to spend any money on software at the moment so I will have to go with your first idea. Unless malwarebytes was the semantic thing you were talking about.

If yes then get into safe mode as Administrator and uninstall it. Also clear your temp and cache.

X670e, 7950x, 64gb 6400mhz, 4080. If you want specifics I'll type it out. I use edge now on this pc. I think I may have it fixed by using a restore point. The screen hasn't flashed in a bit so time will tell. On a side note, in the process of trying to gain total control over my gpu fans I got in safe mode and launched a ddu and removed everything for my 4080. Upon restart I go to device manager and there it is. I plugged it in and have video. How the he'll do I have video coming from the 4080. Ddu said everything went fine.  I swear to god. I have had the stages problems with this system. I long for the days when a pc did what you told it to do without hassle. I know I'll take some shit for this but I want 98 back.
