Not sure if 500w will be enough

So i have this rig right now http://www.dell.com/ca/p/xps-8700/pd?oc=dxps8700_bt_s1320e&model_id=xps-8700 and i plan to put this gtx 760 in it http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp42761kr. I would like to oc the gpu and a ssd in the future. what psu watage would you suggest and which one do you suggest. The gpu has a 8pin and a 6pin so keep that in mind. thanks.

Oh, I'm not sure what the prices are like there, but if the Corsair models are CX, then that's really good too.

Power consumption gets lower and lower for better and better hardwares.

 

Years ago it was the other way round - Graphics cards up to Nvidia GTX 5xx were power hungry but since Kepler it's a different story. Check out the 750 Ti. For CPUs, Core 2 was very good performance per Watt compared to earlier stuff, Sandy bridge was way better performance, Ivy made little diff but Haswell continues the trend of more computing power, less electrical power.

 

Suggestions? Buy a KillaWatt and see what your rig really consumes at the socket. I have several of them and the actual Wattage of my various systems at idle and load surprised even me.

 

Seriously - meta-computing teaches you so much - get a KillaWatt.

500watts is enough, for a cheap one that wont blow up straight away.  The Corsair CX 500, for a much better one I recommend the Seasonic G 550 80+ gold.

You already have a rig. Buy the GPU and a KillaWatt. Fit the GPU and see if the power at the socket is anywhere near what the PSU can supposedly handle.

 

You can do it in stages, testing real world figures.

Ok, I understand... So get the Wattage tester ASAP - they're cheap. My rig (in sig) takes 50W idle and no more than 190W under full load with Prime95 and Furmark running. I was susprised.

 

I think you can run that GPU with your current PSU but you don't know unless you try it.

um are you sure you arent power starving it because 190 seems fishy since the 660 alone has a 140 tdp

It never gets there - even with Furmark running... GPU is at nearly 100%

 

Edit - I'm gonna run downstairs and try furmark and p95 to be sure I'm not remembering wrong, brb

OK OK OK, my bad, 190W flatout was an earlier test, idk what config.

 

I just ran furmark and prime 95 and I couldn't get it over 248 Watts with various settings. 2500k and GTX 660 @ stock speeds/volts.

 

Point is - 500 Watts (or even 460) is good for near enough any sensible rig these days - If you need more, you probably know that already.

 

Trying to answer the OP question - Test Wattage at the socket to get a real idea otherwise you don't know.
