Mullvad launches Mullvad Browser in partnership with Tor Project

Summary

 

Mullvad has partnered with the Tor Project to release their own browser Mullvad Browser, which is open source.

 

Their browser is quite unlike Tor Browser in that all the tor network stuff has been stripped out and Mullvad VPN stuff built in along with NoScript and Ublock Origin which both come installed by default.

 

The security levels from Tor Browser still feature in Mullvad Browser as well making it a potentially more secure Firefox based browser for people who don't want to always use Tor.

 

It is only available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and as a Firefox Extension at this time. It is worth pointing out that the Firefox extension has less functionality than the full Mullvad Browser.

 

The browser does require a VPN client to be installed separately to use the VPN functionality as yours truly learned after giving it a spin. The browser doesn't seem to require users of Mullvad Browser to use Mullvad VPN but it looks like they work best together.

Mullvad CEO Jan Jonsson told TechRadar that they have chosen the Tor Project as they believe it's the best when it comes to privacy-focused browsers. "We have, for a long time, been devoted supporters of the Tor Project and we share their values when it comes to people's privacy and fighting mass surveillance," he said.

An interesting point raised by The Verge around the effectiveness of Mullvad browser is the fact that if there are few people using it, these might be easily fingerprinted just for being the only ones not displaying such detail. 

Replying to this, Jonnsson told TechRadar: "We hope that as many people as possible want to use the Mullvad Browser. That’s why you don’t have to be a Mullvad VPN customer to use it. The more people who use it, the better for privacy. We hope that people start to consider their internet behavior and join the resistance against mass surveillance, big data gathering and surveillance capitalism."

My thoughts

This is kinda cool though I think they should make it easier to use Mullvad VPN straight from their browser without having to have the VPN client app installed. Tho I imagine that's fixed by installed the Mullvad VPN browser extension. Maybe they could just install that by default and ask users who start the browser for the first time whether they use Mullvad VPN or not and enable the extension for those who use it and disable it for those who don't.

 

Of course the fact that it doesn't rely on Mullvad VPN as I initially suspected it did does make it a lot easier for people who use other VPNs to use the browser.

 

As a side note, I'm being a bit nit picky here but Mullvad would also do well to provide better ways of installing their browser on Linux. Right now it's just extracting a .tar.xz file where you want to install the browser. This problem isn't exclusive to Mullvad Browser, it also affects Tor Browser and Firefox downloads on linux from Mozilla, though most people using Firefox on Linux don't notice this since it comes packaged by package managers and is often pre-installed in a distro.

 

Having more Firefox based browsers isn't a bad thing though I imagine Mozilla might be a bit unhappy if some users switch from Firefox.

It's a middle-way between Firefox and Tor.

Tor will still remain king in terms of privacy (when used properly), however Mullvad is pretty great.

I expect it to make most firefox derivatives and hardened-firefox installs obsolete in the coming months/years as you could just use this instead.

While you could make the case for it offering the security of Tor (whatever that even means considering HTTPS traffic is already encrypted as a baseline), anyone claiming that a VPN offers comparable privacy is fooling both themselves and you. The downsides of Tor are a matter of speed and convenience for the most part and if you just want to watch another country's netflix catalog a VPN is much more reliable, however if you need to evade, say, government surveillance to avoid political persecution there is no comparison.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The Tor browser without the Tor network sounds kind of pointless to me.

I guess it's neat that the browse has some privacy focused settings tweaked out of the box, but that's about it from what I can tell.

Feels like an Apple reveal saying they invented that stuff for the first time. I've been using Brave since ~2018 and as far as i remember the VPN tool was baked in back then. All it's missing that i would love to have is few QOL feature that Microsoft Edge has like the collections and screen reader / translator.
