Hey fellow nerds! A friend asked me today if I could give him a parts list to upgrade from an AM2+ / AM3 era CPU and a GTX960. I'm trying to bump him up to 1440p if I can, but i'm finding it rather difficult to do on the fly, and am going to lean on the forum to help me polish it up.

I literally put this together in 10 minutes whille in my work bathroom, so I dont want to here any sh**** jokes! 😛

No biases to Team red vs Blue or Team Green Vs Red (Vs Blue), but I was gunning for the 6950x due to it's incredibly low price right now and how it tends to crush the new 4070 in 1440p. Everything else is completely open to change, even the GPU. Ideally the 1440p monitor should be over 75mhz, but the friend is generally okay with 1080p (which then the 6950x is way overkill for....)

I'd strongly suggest checking out BestBuy's Open Box section. I picked up my monitor from there, and it was over 50% off. Got it, opened it, and I couldn't tell the difference from a new monitor. Flawless. Granted this might not always be the case, but you can return it if it doesn't pass your inspection.

Build itself looks solid. Nothing I'd really change aside from maybe some more wattage on the PSU.

Is your friend tech savvy? I know the grunt of the AMD cards is nice but they can be a bit of a headache to work with driver wise from time to time.

Is he a tab fiend? 32GB isn't always a bad thing.

i would go with a 5600 or 12400f as there isn't too big of a difference between the 13400f and the 12400f and between the 12400f and the 5600

Also for 13th gen, a b660 board is fine with a bios update

IMO this would be a good am4 5600 build (includes a monitor): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zVQJJM (overspent a bit but coudln't fit in any half decent parts with a monitor

IMO: this would be a good intel one: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RB6HPX

Also to save 20 bucks get the evga 700 gd psu

if you don't need the monitor included then just remove it and get a better cpu like the 13600k or 5800x3d

Message me on discord (bread8669) for more help

Besides maybe getting a higher wattage PSU, and a less expensive case(you can find some that are just as high in quality as the 4000D but come with fans preinstalled for cheaper) I wouldn't really change anything, it's a solid build list.

You could also checkout the used pricing for GPUs, I've been able to snag several 3080Tis and even 3090s for under $800 on ebay. The last 3080Ti I purchased was in like new condition and was only $589.

@TVwazhereAre you near a Microcenter?

https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006288/intel-core-i5-12600k,-gigabyte-z690-aorus-elite-ax-ddr4,-cpu-motherboard-combo

The 12600k is virtually the same as the 13400f at 1440p and 1080p. The 13400f has Alder Lake E cores anyways as well. This would save ~ $90 on motherboard and CPU for more ram.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Yeah, looks pretty decent from where I'm sitting, and all of my history with this tells me that you should be fine.  Having had AMD for a while, then NVidia, now AMD again, I can't say that the "Driver Dance" was ever a "thing" for me, but I also didn't overclock anything (no patience for it, and it didn't provide enough enjoyment), nor update drivers all that often.  If you're not playing AAA games anyway, and don't plan on super-tweaking, it just isn't worth it unless you enjoy doing it.  Wringing out 5% extra performance doesn't matter when your computer is outputting 200+fps.  I'd argue that even if you're only at 45 fps, there's not much noticeable difference between 45 fps and 50fps.  Maybe if you were closer to 30fps you might be able to tell.  But the 6950xt shouldn't run into that for several years at 1080p.

But the build looks great.  The 6950 might run warmer than he'd like, and it is clearly overkill for 1080p gaming, but it's so cheap that unless electricity costs insane amounts, it'll be fine.

Unless you're transferring large files around all the time, a SATA SSD is (mostly) indistinguishable (for gaming) than any NVMe drive.  You could save a few dollars on that, but that's not necessary.

I'd echo dizmo's comment - 32GB isn't that much more expensive, and if your friend is going to keep the machine for 5+ years, it might be worth it to add more RAM now (while you can still get DDR4 RAM cheap, which might not be the case in 3 years) rather than later.

Just a heads up, it's $1500 with the monitor. That's why I stayed away from AM5.

That's about as close as you can get, but still puts it $30 over budget, but for a decent bump in performance.

That's about as close as you can get, but still puts it $30 over budget for a "meh" difference in performance.

Ahh. In that case intel might not be a bad option then. If it were me, I'd just save up an extra $100 to go AM5 or just get an open box monitor/one of FB marketplace.

None of the current gaming monitors are worth it new. NONE. We are SOOOOOO close to a monitor renaissance with OLED/240hz+/QD OLED/instant response times etc. Silly to buy a monitor now.

The Ryzen 5 7600 you linked includes a CPU cooler, which should be "good enough", and you can save $65-ish of it by not adding an additional CPU cooler...

EDIT:  Oh, and add https://www.amazon.com/G-Skill-RipJaws-288-Pin-CL30-40-40-96-F5-6000J3040F16GA2-RS5K/dp/B09Y16CDLG/ as RAM, and save another $15 or so...

We have a best buy near us; I'll double check it but they dont tend to have many open box items from what I'm aware of.

Fair, but we still need a monitor for this build so not getting one really isnt much of an option.

i would go with a 5600 or 12400f as there isn't too big of a difference between the 13400f and the 12400f and between the 12400f and the 5600

I like these two, but I'd re-add the cooler for Failure's list just because I'm not a fan of how anemic the wraith stealth coolers are on the #600 series coolers (I have used them on 2600 and 3600's and I feel they leave much to be desired) plus it's still under budget which left enough room for @dizmo's suggestion of making a full 32gb system instead.

I actually missed that the SSD was DRAMless. I'll make that swap with the EVGA GD price difference 👍

Fun fact the ASrock card just sold out during the time we ere discussing buying all the parts on the list, so we're now up to the XFX or sapphire. I'm letting friend pick since they're the same price (which he's okay with paying) with just different aesthetics

Probably good TBH. The sapphire is better and the XFX is DRASTICALLY better. ASrock cards only have a 1 year warranty too IIRC
