The bitcoin whitepaper, originally by Satoshi Nakamoto (et al) has been found (or rediscovered, depending on the person you ask), located in every OSX version for the last 5 years.

From a report:The baffling discovery (or rediscovery - see below) was recently made by developer and waxy.org writer Andy Baio, who stumbled upon the PDF document while trying to fix a problem with his printer. Anyone with a Mac running macOS Mojave or later can see the PDF for themselves by typing the following command into Terminal:

open /System/Library/Image\ Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf

If you're running macOS 10.14 or later, the 184 KB Bitcoin PDF should immediately open in Preview. The document can also be located via Finder: Navigate to Macintosh HD -> System -> Library -> Image Capture -> Devices, then open the Contents -> Resources folder. The whitepaper titled "simpledoc.pdf" should be in there.

 

My thoughts

I personally just opened the document.  I'm sitting here for the last week and a half wondering why my macbook has been a bit hot.....

I somehow extremely doubt that given that apple is a power hungry corporation hell bent on controlling legal ridicule.

 

Next Level hack if they have been pipe stuffing bitcoin miners into their software and now everyone's machine has a mining rootkit

Huh I also just did this on my work machine, and it works! Anyone know what VirtualScanner.app is for maybe?

EDIT: I'm on the 2022 model Macbook pro for anyone interested

I totally think Apple will release their own crypto. It makes sense for their ecosystem and is also in Apple fashion to wait for the tech to mature. I mean with release of FedNow it makes even more sense

someone ran a test of a virtual scanner app, and accidentially merged his mess into the main branch instead of deleting it.

 

i have to use a step by step guide to use git, and even i can see how that would be a common mistake, and at the scale of an OS not even be obvious it happened.

There's a lot of random oddities in older versions of iOS/macOS like that. A lot of interesting screw-ups too.

- For iOS 15.0-15.1 beta 1, Apple was shipping development versions of iBoot (their bootloader).

- They left in the /AppleInternal folder in macOS Catalina (used to store internal testing apps, binaries, settings, etc.)

- iOS 11.0.x has a file iOS10.mov left in it, which is just the WWDC iOS 10 ad.

True, but it's risk/reward right? There's a lot of risk by running miners on personal PCs around the globe, not a lot of risk pushing back on right to repair.

this is more implications for sloppy QC, and someone was reading up on bitcoin on his break, and needed to scan "the nearest document" in the afternoon to test the app.

 

the idea that this implies that apple is somehow running a coin miner on every mac in existance is about as valid as the idea that if that document were to have been ham lasagna it would somehow have made apple antisemitic, because (some) jewish people dont eat dishes that combine milk and meat.

but.. how rewarding is running a background crypto miner you then have to stealthily convert into cash, because that would be A LOT of crypto, and A LOT of bad press.

I feel this is legitimate cause to do deeper digging into mac OS.  Given that Louis Rossman just gave up the goat, and all of you are idiots, obviously whatever apple has done in the last 5 years has been working.
