I thought you were for Internet freedom and privacy.

What is being suggested and pushed regarding this issue is that everyone has to identify themselves using government issued IDs in order to access Internet services. It would be a massive blow to privacy.

You could make the argument that at least that's a decision which adults are empowered to make for themselves.

The average 12 year old shouldn't really have the option to do so; I don't want to sound all Helen Lovejoy here, but I'd rather kids that age weren't able to just say "Oh, I'm definitely 18+" on a tickbox to get access to all sorts of stuff online that they probably shouldn't. A forum like this is relatively harmless of course, but if they can sign up for something like Tinder, much more problematic, y'know? So maybe there needs to be some sort of sliding scale of requirement; a basic forum needing less verification than a dating site, or a porn site, etc. General social media probably sitting somewhere in the middle.

Remember that this is the UK we are talking about. I didn't come up with the idea of linking online IDs to government issued IDs out of the blue. It is literally the solution that the UK government is proposing in order to ensure age restrictions are followed. I think that's a terrible solution and a far worse thing than letting kids use TikTok.

I wouldn't say it's a choice if people are forced to do it.

"Do this or go without", especially when it's something as basic as socializing is not really a choice in my eyes.

I am all for children not having access to certain things before a certain age. Social media at the age of 13 sounds pretty fair to me. What I am keen on are the massive privacy implications that occur when that idea tries to get enforced. I think it is bad to let the government track everything you say online and being able to trace it back to each individual person. Remember, it's the UK we are talking about here. The World Champion of Surveillance that are currently trying to essentially ban end-to-end encryption.

If we are going to stop to the confines of the UK, then this shouldn't be an issue and nothing to worry. Privacy hasn't existed in that country for more than 2 decades by this point.

Can't cry for privacy when it never was there in the first place
