14 Year Rig Reboot - WIP

mnm0710

Alright here we go.  This will be a work in progress over a few months as I want to wait for some things to come out but excited to get back into the game!  If anyone has any thoughts/recommendations please shout.

Last time I built a computer for myself was back in early 2009 right when the famous Intel Bloomfield had launched.  Only thing I've changed is some fans and the graphics card.

If you have any idea what to do with these old parts let me know (everything works).  I'm also really confused as to why the X58 PRIME is selling for like $200+ on amazon/ebay.  Maybe I should repurpose into a NAS?

OLD SPECS:

I know right! Just for giggles I ran Cinebench, Heaven and Crystal before I wiped my old computer. Just for a fun comparison when the new one is done.

UPDATE 3

Got the Power Supply today.  Was hoping to do Seasonic Vertex 1200 or beQuiet Dark 13 1000 but can't find them available yet.  Any thoughts about waiting for those over this one?

Temp open chassis should get here tomorrow (Any guesses?).  I'm going to use that one until the NV7 comes out (and if the reviews are good).

Yea totally understand that it was overkill.  Some of the other options were out of stock/back ordered and I thought I would be building this rig sooner. Like I said I was trying to get a Vertex GX or Dark Power 13 1000W.  If I am able to get one before I start building it, I will switch and return this TK.

UPDATE 4

Got my case in from Newegg today and went to Microcenter to get the big guts.  All I'm missing now is the AIO that should get here Wednesday.

Going to use 3 of the AL120s to replace the fans on the AIO Rad and then another 3 for the case.  Might pick up a couple more depending.

UPDATE 5

Okay the first step in actually building was to assemble the case which comes in what looks like a normal mid-tower sized box but is in pieces.

First, I have to say, ThermalTake's instructions are horrible.  I had to use some build log videos on YT with the original Core P3 owners and try to compare with the Pro reviews and the manual.

20230129_211251.thumb.jpg.725358a04564ba85295c9d406a362fb3.jpg20230129_211431.thumb.jpg.ed6e663b5f95dec9ea5fdb4e23ce6721.jpg
20230129_211656.thumb.jpg.2d9f38c99b9112d88bebf14a88d79ea5.jpg

The screws are all mixed together and 1 set of the same screw was split between 2 tiny ziplocs (wtf). So the first thing I decided to do was separate all the screws and figure out what was for which.  They provide a bunch of ones that you will only use depending on the configuration and the different types of hardware you install.  For example I will likely not have any HDDs or 2.5" SSDs.

Probably a little extra but sorting and labeling the screws made my life way easier during the assembly process and likely will keep it simple for the computer build as well.

20230129_214118.thumb.jpg.9dc964819e34597e253764ab0c03442b.jpg

Then I installed the PSU brackets, the 2 PCI-e brackets and the arms that hold the tempered glass panel in place.  For the smaller PCI-e bracket (the one that has the input shields/thumb screws), you can decide how you want to orient them based on if you're going with horizontal GPU alignment or vertical.  I am planning on vertical with a riser cable so this is how it was installed.

20230129_222847.thumb.jpg.00fee95b961241454357c20757853808.jpg

Then I installed the fan bracket - you can install this on the front or top depending on what you want.  I am going to put the AIO radiator on the motherboard panel so I decided to do a front mounted fan bracket to put another set of fans for intake for all the rest of the components.

After that it was the tempered glass panel that has rubber grommet inserts and rubber washers that you put on both sides so that none of the metal actually touches the glass.

20230129_224516.thumb.jpg.a547d45674442c9b376622dba21df774.jpg

That is pretty much it for now until I am ready to build the computer itself.  I did keep my screws organized into the same baggies but labeled them based on my number scheme.

20230129_225253.thumb.jpg.430190f45b02c7b6a031753434f4e1d9.jpg

Here are some done shots.  You'll notice I did install the rubber feet on the right side panel.  Typically that's only if you want to do horizontal configuration for the case.  I just put it on there because it makes it easy to lay the computer flat and build on that side - when I get to building the computer at my office desk or something.  This way the side panel doesn't get damaged and the metal doesn't damage any of my desks.  I'll remove the rubber feet once I'm done done.

8K is funny

20230203_122353.thumb.jpg.b6be73416bfd6d01ac1bcca0a62c358c.jpg20230203_123117.thumb.jpg.455d6303fb128342cc93e737bb81e8c0.jpg

Windows scaling seems to be tough in Windows 11.  Was getting 30-35 FPS in A Plague Tale - Requiem with DLSS set to Quality.  For some reason it kept crashing when I tried to turn DLSS off completely.

Thanks! Appreciate it! It was fun to get back into it after this long.  The nervy part was just the Thermal Paste and the AIO install.

Well that's a solid build with your upgrade schedule, should last another 14 years.

As for x58 being expensive, good x58 boards are rare ish and highly desirable because you slap in a xeox x5690 and a aio 240mm and turn bclk up till you see 5ghz come out of it.

they are insanely powerful and use an inane amount of power.
probably best to sell it, I'd worry for your circuit breakers otherwise with that housefire tier pc you built and a fully turnt up x58 build
