Bought AMD? You got played – Ryzen 7000 non-X Review

AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series cranked up the power draw, but had performance to match. Now that the non-X chips are out with limited power draw, did AMD accidentally play themselves – And you?

Definitely interesting, though since I paid $348 for my 7700x and the 7700 is $329... it's linear.  Plus i got DDR5-6000 for free with it.

 

So I guess those that paid $399 without free RAM got played?  

 

Ehh, it's just how they all do business.  Always something better right around the corner.

I guess that's the defining metric though, right? I suppose it all matters how far away that next corner is. A year later? No one bats an eye. A few months later? People get angry. Then the question becomes what exactly is the magical time window that it turns from unacceptable to acceptable?

Plus we need to add intent here as well.  I'm sure AMD held back the non-X chips until they had a good bead on how the 7000 series was adopted.  

 

It happens with all sorts of products though, so it is what it is I guess.  Were they trying to play us?  Doubtful.  Everyone puts out the new hotness first, then scaled back units after.

I feel like the intent is often extrapolated directly from the time-frame, so they kind of go hand-in-hand. If a newer (cheaper/faster/whatever) thing comes out too soon, the intent becomes implied, whether it's true or not.

 

But yes, they always start with the halo, expensive line and trickle down. So anyone surprised by that specifically hasn't been working on PCs very long.

I really wish that you would include at least a couple of games at 1440P or 4K Ultra settings in the gaming benchmarks. Who is buying a 7900X or 13900K and gaming at 1080P? It would be nice to know what kind of real world impact this would have on me upgrading a CPU.

I upgraded from an A10-5745 to a Ryzen 5 2600. I'm pretty happy with my decision. Maybe I'll jump to a 5xxx model that my motherboard already supports.

The only thing the title specified is that I bought AMD. Didn't say which one.

 

PS: And to go further back, before my A10-5745 laptop, I had a desktop with an Athlon XP 64 3000+.

 

PPS: And before that an AMD K6.

 

PPPS: And before that, our computer was a 486 with one floppy drive and no fixed storage.

Bencmarks are done at 1080p to allow the CPU's to stretch their legs. If they did them at higher resolution then the CPU's are likely to be bottlenecked and as a result there won't be much of a discerneable difference between a 7950x and 7600x making the benchmarks mostly pointless.

What happened with the 13600k results, seem a bit low, like here in CB23, Blender, Code...?  @GabenJr

Should have a multicore result of > 24000 instead of 19500!

Not to mention the 7700 result also is missing a few thousands and making no sense.

It would be great if you could include the idle power consumption (e.g. on Windows Desktop) in future tests as well. Like you said in the video, energy costs are higher then ever. When I'm using my pc I'm usually browsing the web or listening to music the same amount of time or even more than I'm acutally gaming.

If you are on a 5800X or above CPU and are at 1440P or above, barring the RTX 4090 you are not really missing anything.
