Is the rest of the network 2.5 gb or faster? You have a switch and router, and other devices that are at least 2.5?

I would likely look into 10 gb as there will be many more options and much more info.

Yes the rest of my network is 2.5 gbit
Is 10 gbe not more expensive?

10 is more expensive, but there is a lot more in the way of options. What router and switches do you have that are 2.5?

And to answer your direct question, I am not entirely sure what 2.5 cards would have good driver support in freeBSD. I’m sure something does.

The intel x550-2 is probably the best option here. Its a 10gbe nice that can do 2.5gbe and well supported in pfsense.

I don't know of any dual 2.5gbe nic controllers. 2.5gbe is normally used for low end systems, where the advanced features like dual ports aren't needed.  The higher end nics have some nice features if you want to use them and thats probably what id get.

Otherwise get a dual 2.5gbe port. These have a pcie switch and 2 controllers. It seems like most of the common controllers will work now, but Id check the forum first.

You can get Syba dual port 2.5Gbe with some tinkering (manuals on 'net) working with pfSense, though it's Realtek based.

Or you can get this. It's Intel I225 based, and works out of the box with pfSense.

While 10Gbe is nice, it's also quite more expensive.... your choice 🙂

Oh that’s not bad. OP, I’d consider this for sure.

You can get a 10gbe card thwt can negotiate down to 2.5, but I have heard that can sometimes have issues, although I don’t have personal experience.
