Anno 1404 / dawn of discoveries (title depends on region) is a great city building type game that has LAN play. look out for sales on this one.

OpenTTD is great  if you're both VERY into micromanaging games. *and it's free*

Civilization V doesnt need any explanation i think... and it tends to go dirt cheap on steam sales.

SuperTuxKart is one of those 'goofy FOSS games' that is a cartoony sort of fun. if you've ever played crash team racing it'll feel quite natural, if you grew up with mario kart it tends to feel a bit odd.

trackmania nations forever is also still a really fun game. *and it's free*

Warhammer Vermintide 2 is free to keep on steam right now. It's kinda like Left 4 Dead, in that it focuses on co-op play against hordes of enemies.

G.Skill TridentZ 3200MHz 2x8GB

Path of Exile is a legit hack & slash that's better than anything Blizzard has put out since Diablo 2.

I wasn't counting free MMORPG's, but if that's your thing, Star Trek Online is a solid option.

Assuming you're okay with co-op games, Polygunners is really fun with multiple people. The only problem is that everybody needs a controller, but that might not be a problem.

Edit: I'm an idiot and wrote the wrong game name

If you like flying planes and blowing stuff up I'd suggest DCS World

Base game is free and includes a combat capable SU-25T ground attack jet ( Russian A-10 ) with simplified cockpit interaction (all keybinds/no clickable cockpit)

and

A TF-51 fully clickable cockpit but un-armed trainer version of the WW2 P-51.

As well, you can try any of the paid modules for a 2 week trial that resets every 6 months.

There is a learning curve as it's a simulator so you'll want to watch some youtube tutorials or read some guides/manuals so you understand whats going on but you can host your own server or join multiplayer servers with the free planes if the server allows it.

There is also a built in mission editor and tons of free missions and mods so tons of content available.

While the game is free I'd suggest a controller or preferably Logitech Extreme 3d joystick ($35 new or cheaper used) and a $13 phone app called Smooth track for head tracking in game as it makes a world of difference.

You didn't post your specs so I'd suggest downloading it and seeing how well it runs for you before going any further if it sounds interesting. Pick the open beta branch if you want public multiplayer as that's what all the server run.

Team fortress 2 is free.

Overwatch 2...... Exists? Maybe?

Counter strike global offensive is awesome and requires excellent teamwork. You can play something called "DUOs" where it's 2 vs 2.

If people ask HVH? It means "hack vs hack" so you should say no to that ... Or.... You can try lol.

You can also play no more room in hell and make some zombie maps with the map editor.

Warframe.

Dunno about it's state right now, but it used to be fun.

Rocket League

World of Warships is also quite a bit of fun and you can coordinate together, like using a battleship in combo with a destroyer.

Guild Wars 2, exploring Tyria with your dad would be an awesome experience. Base game is free.

You can teleport to all 4 starter maps so you don't need to select the same race as your dad if you don't feel like it.

He can be a noble Norn while you can be a filthy Charr.

You mean, just PUBG. Not PUBG battlegrounds. Because PUBG literally stands for Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. That's like saying Thermalright TRUE. Thermalright Thermalright ultra extreme, when only TRUE is the correct abbreviation. It's a shit game, too. Movement is slow, full of cheaters, devs don't know what they're doing. Head dev, Playerunknown took the money and ran away to Amsterdam. What a joke.

We listing old school free goodies? Here comes one for my old people, it's sort of dead but some people still play it. F.E.A.R Combat. Multiplayer portion of one of the best games ever.

Otherwise... uh... Warzone 2.0 should also be free, but ridden of same issues PUBG suffered all the time.

It is not my error that they changed the name of the game to PUBG: Battlegrounds. I know how it sounds/seems, but they changed the name to it so that's that.

Yeah actually, I was going to say HL2: DM or any of the Source engine titles honestly, as they're cheap and, well... timeless really. You can even rent a server for HL2: DM for not so much, or create one yourself. Granted it does cost a tee bit more than an Unreal 2003 server or something, but it is what it is. I had one for a while. 🙂

I may be off here, but everyone here recommending FPS games and competitive shooters ... are you missing the first post where he says he wants to play something with his father?

Maybe I'm wrong to assume but most older folks don't have the reaction times or interest in playing some mindless killing over and over again, hence why I suggested role playing games or adventure or platformers,

I know for sure if my father was alive, he wouldn't want to play with me Quare 3 arena or stuff like that, but he would play some co-op puzzles or something slow paced like a RPG or Heroes 3 maybe (turn based strategy) as it can be compared to Chess or other games with well defined rules.

Maybe father was into board games, so maybe he'd dig dungeons and dragons or other such games based on those rules...

I was actually going to suggest Microsoft Flight Simulator originally, but buying two copies and then further content would murder their budget, hence why I deleted that portion of my post. He can fly with his father in two different planes across the globe, and the game is about as chill as it gets. 😉

However, they can indeed resort to board / card games. I always rock some checkers and reversi online on Flyordie site with my mom whenever I set up two PCs in my room... she wants to play battleroyale games with circle closing a lot lol, says she would manage it real well. But her meneire's sadly doesn't allow her to look at fast motion without blurring her head. She can however watch me play the flight simulator, or even probably play herself a bit. She wants me to set up a joystick setup for her PC with my 6600. 😛

Heck, the OP could remove the PC out of the equitation, buy a set of cards and play stuff like blackjack if we're going down that route. I never gamble for money, but sure as hell love me a good card game (like baccarat, gambling stuff lol). No money involved though, again.

There are many fathers aged 40-50 that have sons old enough to play any game, and I don't think that gamers who are 35-45-55 are to be thrown out or limited to playing only casual simple games... We don't know the ages here.
