Are GTX Cards obselete?

setsakara

Nvidia is still supporting them in their latest drivers, so that's far away from happening for at least <5 years.

Something can receive support, but still be obsolete.

So, it depends on what the definition of obsolete is, in this case.

For me personally, yes. They are. But for a lot of people, no, they aren't.

Depends on your definition of obsolete. I mean, they kind of are. There are no new ones so by that definition they are obsolete. The only GTX card that is still any good is the 1080ti. Everything else has been spanked by even low end new stuff

My GTX 980 Superclocked from EVGA is still quite the capable card. No.

A $200 RX 6600 would absolute body it.

A used 3060ti for $300 would practically double the 980s frames.

Anyone still rocking maxwell is doing themselves a huge disservice. Pascal is still mostly alright.

It's better for my use case than a 6600 - I need CUDA and NVENC. It also has DVI-I which I need. And it's a blower cooler, which is the best for my workstation case. Runs CAD software fine, has a decent video en/decoder and runs GTA 5 maxed out at 120+ FPS. Thought of buying an RTX A4500 but realized I don't really need one. (Not a big gamer but it meets my 1080p144hz needs.)

Compared to many video cards, it's still quite capable.

For professional uses, sure.

For Modern AAA games (Cyberpunk, etc.) even at 1080p/modest settings?

... 1660 Super, 1660 Ti? Still great low power draw 1080p cards, especially as they can be scored very cheap on the used market. Turing core arch, same as RTX 2000 series.

A nebulous question like this clearly indicates the level of sophisticated thought the OP put into it.  So in like kind, I'm just going to respond and say "yes, GTX is outdated".  Because as far as the OP is concerned, that's precisely the case.

You're comparing a $200 card to a $80 card (new vs used).

The RX6600 is absolutely not going to 'body' a 980 in every scenario: I have a PCIE 3.0 slot on my old Haswell box, and it's so old, it has issues with PCIE 3.0 so I normally run it at PCIE 2.0. A 6600 would very much be gimped by that, and probably wouldn't even run as well as a 980, since PCIE 2.0 X8 is going to limit the bandwidth to a 6600 to the point that it would cause problems.

In a PCIE 4.0 X8 slot, the 6600 is fine. In a PCIE 2.0X16 slot, not so much.

Out of the top 50 current most-played games on Steam Charts, there are like 2-3 that support any RTX-specific features.

So I'd say no.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Depends on how you define obsolete.

For me even the 1080Ti's performance wouldn't cut it anymore. It's simply overwhelmed at 4K, even more so when targeting >60 fps. So for me they're obsolete.

However, if you're only targeting a 1440p 144Hz monitor, then higher end 900 or 1000 series cards can still serve you well for years.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Pretty sure it'll still body that thing up for good, this is not a 6500 lol.

It will absolutely badge that 980, especially as far as VRAM and powers are concerned. The 6600 is a lot more efficient, actually, mine is great. I can maintain well over 90 FPS in Trepang all bells and whistles at 3440x1440. I kicked it up to %125 power limit and the overclock sliders all the way to the right. Good luck getting the best everyday 980 on earth touch this card, lol.

I think the lower end and older GTX (6xx and 7xx) cards are probably getting into the end of their serviceable life at this point. I have a GTX-980 and it's OK as long as you're using 1080P and mediumish settings. 1080 and 1080ti are probably still pretty viable.
