Weird issues after replacing 3700X with 5800X3D

Bios issue

Hi,

I have decided to replace my old trusty 3700X with new shiny 5800X3D while it was on sale. Everything was supposed to be a smooth ride, sadly it isn't.

First of all, rest of my system:

Gigabyte X570 I AORUS PRO

Team Group 32GB (2x16GB) 3600MHz CL18 T-Force Vulcan Z

2x Corsair MP510 960GB

AMD Radeon 6900 XT

Corsair SF600 600W

The issues are rather bizarre, it's like one of those horror movies where things seem the same, but are quite off.

First of all, when I was Alt-Tabbing in games or benchmark, whole system was extremely slow, to the point it took 15-20s for the alt-tab pop-up to disappear.

All the benchmarks were showing good results, system was stable, just extremely slow. In games the FPS difference between the 3700X and 5800X3D was noticeable, however the system was still insanely slow while alt tabbing, clicking out of the borderless windowed mode etc.

I figured it might be something with Windows, even if CPU change shouldn't technically impact it, so I reinstalled Windows.

That's where issues started to become even more bizarre.

Alt-tabbing issue was no longer there, however now I couldn't install half of the applications. Steam would keep giving me issues that were only resolved by setting installer in compatibility mode with "Run as admin" option. Next, I couldn't run any game that was using EAC, it wouldn't install the service properly. Office 365 wouldn't install, I would get 5s freezes whenever I opened or closed new tab in Vivaldi. Youtube videos would sometimes not load at all.

I have tried pretty much everything:

- I checked the RAM with and without XMP profile

- I swapped the RAM to sticks from another machine

- I swapped GPU to 2070 Super

- I swapped PSU to a 750W one temporarily

The only thing that fixed the issue was to install the 3700X back. It seems like the CPU is faulty, but now I'm wondering if it could perhaps be the motherboard, as it's the only thing I can't check swap, 2nd machine is on Intel platform.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Are you running the latest BIOS? That's the first thing I'd check when putting in a new chip.

I agree with @Zando_. Make sure you're on the latest BIOS version. IIRC, some motherboard's do need an updated BIOS specifically in order to support the 5800X3D.

Yes, I installed latest BIOS before putting in the CPU, to make sure the AGESA 1.2.0.7 was in place.

EDIT:

Also Gigabyte doesn't have any guidelines as to BIOS update order, so I'm assuming only the newest one is good enough.

I didn't think it would help, as the update factory reset all the settings and I additionally factory reset it again after. I could try that in a bit.

Update to the absolute latest stable bios. I had almost the exact same issues. CPU isn't faulty, BIOS support just isn't fully there with whatever you're running.

The one I updated to, is the latest stable. I tried downgrading by one version (only two of them support 5800X3D) without luck.

*same* or similar?

im just wondering... op never said if they're on win 11 too, i think?

it's just funny, i also upgraded to a 3d recently... it went pretty smooth, but, i also changed the hard drive,  and that didn't went so smooth... (i unno,  sometimes windows doesn't like nvme much maybe?) i also didn't reinstall windows (10) but its working fine now, i just had to change boot order a bit in bios... (weird)

my point is... anything possibly with the hard drive?  because what op is saying i immediately think hard drive, not cpu... (even if the back to back cpu change doesn't fit in that theory)

ALSO did you update the AMD chipset driver? (they also didn't say, i think?)

i did. its working fine. i also updated the bios. to the very first that supports the 3d. because that's how i roll. and its working fine.

but yeah, what is your hard-drive situation?  And chipset driver?

The direction tells you... the direction

My bad, I have solved it, it was shitty BIOS from Gigabyte, I went back one version and it works perfectly now.
