I really hope this gets made one day (and the future of VR/AR)

MrTomnus

Okay, so I bet at one point in your life you have wished Pokémon were real. Come on, don't lie. We've all wanted to cuddle up with a Charmander or a Jigglypuff at night and take a walk in the park with a Pikachu, or see the world riding on a Salamence or Dragonite.

Well we might not get the flying part, but I really hope one day we get something close.

With VR being really popular I really hope that one day we will get Pokémon in augmented reality! It could use the Oculus Rift with a camera that uses augmented reality to put you in your own Pokémon adventure! The Oculus would have to be wireless at this point obviously. You'd be able to see wild Pokémon and other real life trainers who have their own Pokémon. With real Pokéballs that can be animated, using AR you could send your Pokémon out to battle and catch wild ones. Then you can give them commands and you can have awesome looking battles anywhere you want, complete with AR explosions! That was the only thing I didn't like about the games - the battles aren't the same as in the anime. Being able to think on the spot and come up with your own strategy would be so cool and no battle would be the same! And being able to talk to your Pokémon and travel with it would be magical

There could be tournaments where everyone else with an Oculus Rift can be in the audience and watch in real time. Or if you don't want to battle you can just collect Pokémon and walk around everywhere with them :D

I wonder how close we actually are to this... Maybe 10-15 years? All we need is slightly more powerful mobile processing, improved AI (maybe improvements in fuzzy logic could help with this) and higher capacity/longer lasting batteries.

I would certainly buy one in a heartbeat if this actually happened. This sort of thing is why I'm excited for VR/AR. Virtual deathmatches, having huge alien boss fights with friends in "real life". But most importantly, Pokémon  ^_^

What are you excited for in the future of VR?

Why do we have to mix reality with virtual reality? When we mix stuff it usually ends up badly.

Okay, but can you not agree that having a Pokémon battle in your school playground (assuming you're teen/young person) would be awesome? Or if you're an adult, having a battle in the car park at work during your lunch break?

The only reason why I say augmented reality is due to the feeling of you actually being there. An experience like this sitting in a chair just wouldn't be the same. You could create an entirely virtual battlefield if you wanted - but the freedom to move around, to feel the air around you, is what makes it more real.

Umm, okay there's that. I think that's kind of unavoidable. I won't deny it would be a unique experience, but I think the market is too niche for it to work.

I dunno.

Nintendo has been making dodgy decisions that it's getting increasingly difficult to stand by their side. Fans have been wanting Pokemon Stadium 3 for the longest time, "newer" fans have been wanting a remake of the 3rd gen games for awhile now. Then we have Nintendo killing support for online play for many games not even that old, Black and White 2 being among those games. All of this shows that Nintendo seems to be out of touch with their Pokemon loving fanbase. VR mons would be neat, but I can't see that happening.

As for general VR, in 15 years, I'd most likely have a kid or two with my wife and virtual anything would be a low priority.

He was talking about porn.

And no, you underestimate the buying power of love-depraved freaks all over the world.

Also, nintendo doesn't really seem to care about pokemon anymore. The recent pokemons have obviously been rushed just to say there's something new.

What would be cool though is a PC builder simulator. With Linus as your advisor.

Yeah, that's why I've lost a bit of faith in the series a bit. I miss the 2D aesthetic as well - I hated the direction they went in with 3D. It's nice but they were using 2D sprites in Diamond and Pearl in a 3D world, which looked awful. And yeah their online play is kind of awful too. It has so much potential but they've left it now...

Haha, well I was going on the basis that very few people would own an oculus compared to the number of people who own a computer, so nobody would bother making that kind of content for the rift because they wouldn't get the money back.
