Should I start a neighborhood computer repair business?

terrytek

There's a lot of things that go into computer repair and a lot of tools involved you need your own workbench of multiple parts you can test to troubleshoot a PC, which requires a lot of money upfront, and to be honest the people who are going to get their PC's fixed like grandparents or people who don't know enough to fix it themselves would just take it to bestbuy or an actual store, they don't want a 14 year old kid fixing it for them.

Fine

, then I have to go with the cliché lawn mowing business.

How about doing mindless busywork that your parents don't want to do? Like sorting bills?

I need to earn some extra dough, so I need to make money fast. I at least know the types of components and common mistakes inside of a PC. Should I start one? And the price may start around 10 bucks for repairs.

Yeah! I plan on doing this in the summer. I'm 14 and can remove any virus on any computer, guaranteed. I think that once people see you know what you're doing and actually fix the problem, they will tell others about you and will want you to fix it again. They might even pay you more if you do a good enough job!

How about you be a good boy and show your mom you deserve a new PC. I'm 14 and guess what I got a week ago? A $2100 PC. That I just finished building. And no one wants a kid to fix their PC's. Trust me.

I know, but the people who go to best buy don't know better and only think that a "professional" can fix it.

Technically he's a teen...

You could wait two more years and people might be more trustworthy. For now, you could do odd jobs or find a part-time job somewhere. That or grovel and beg.

in a regular non-techie standpoint, i'd rather have someone that has prior experience and certification than some stupid little 14 year old that could potentially destroy my thousands of dollar product.

i'm pretty sure anyone that can use google search can do that.

When I was 14 I wanted to become a Hobo and fight crime with my shotgun...

Interesting....

Kids are the future but adults just don't and probably not anytime soon, see that in us.

I'm also 14 and fixing computers for relatives/people that we know, etc. It's usually really easy stuff like removing bloatware and removing "popups".

Funny story here, I was really reluctant to fix this guy's laptop the other day because it had loads of porn on it. Seriously, he renamed his downloads folder "sl*t box".

Still earned my $20 tho.

Lol I once opened up the computer case of my friend to see if it had a molex cable(which it did not) and the next day he said "The screen turned blue, fix my computer, you broke it" even though I did nothing and he already had 50+ viruses on it

If you want to earn some money just do any job over the summer. If you want experience you could ask companies for an internship (not sure if you can get one of those easily at your age in the US). Even if you end up as a help for all the annoying stuff (like getting coffee or copying stuff) you'll get a first gimpse of how an ordinary day at a company looks like.

But as you said, the next electronic stores are miles away.

Don't forget, if you offer to help people with their tech problems you will be held responsible for everything that doesn't work afterwards, even if it wasn't your fault.

Alright, according to the negative comments, I won't start one. I guess lawn mowing is what I will do. I mean, what will go wrong while mowing?

you're still young. plenty of time for a profession later on

enjoy your youth because as you get older, shit gets real and you wont have time to enjoy the simple things.

round up some mates and spend some time outdoors, or glue yourself to your PC, both of which are A-OK

I am not trying to be mean just realistic.. I don't think people are going to want you working on their computer... if you do decide to advertise etc then make up a contract that protects you and them from mistakes etc etc..

Do a lot of research on the web about repair businesses etc..

Your age is going to slow you down though.

This is huge also.. if a problem happens when they get the computer home even a week after they are going to think you did it.. especially with you age they are going to assume you don't know what you are doing. Hence why contracts need to be made and signed..

If I were you I would just take the time and study study study computers.. do other odd jobs for cash.

If somebody said they would repair PC problems I had for $10 (if I lived in the US) I would not trust them.

Same also for $10 its really going to be a waste of time. I really dont know what kind of problems you think are only going to take $10 of your time.
