Would my headphones be too loud with this amp?

Im using the beyerdynamic dt 990 pro 80 ohm and im getting an amp and dac.

 

I need to know if it will be too loud or if it will be fine.

Im getting the schiit modius and magnius (yes ik theyre overkill but its for futureproofing.) Currently using onboard realtek audio.

just don't turn the volume up too much which you shouldn't do anyway to protect your hearing

If i turn it up too much i can damage my hearing and/or headphones, also should i adjust the volume in software or on the amp? I plan on maxing volume in software and using the dial on the amplifier.

It's really up to you. I personally wouldn't because I find it easier to dial the volume in software using my keyboard in an emergency rather than reaching over to an amp but you do you. As long as you have safety nets from blowing your ears out.

technically when reducing volume it's better to do it as close to the output as possible to have the strongest signal-to-noise possible so doing it at the amp would actually be preferrable. opposite is true when you're boosting the signal - better to do it as close as possible to the source. but when the setup is as simple as this it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

reducing the volume in windows kinda reduces quality, because it compresses the signal or something, right now i only use volume in software and kept windows at 100%

How is that overkill? Those are a pretty entry level DAC and amp.

some people said they were overkill compared to the modi and magni which are definetly entry level.

 

If this 400 dollar setup is entry level then what would be considered mid-range or high end?

I have 32ohm high sensitivity headphones that I plug into my Emotiva A-100 which is basically a speaker amplifier running to the headphone out, and I have zero issues.  Like said, just turn it down.

True, but in typical cases for typical listeners it doesn't make enough of a difference when compared to convenience.  However I tend to leave everything in software at max and use my dac and/or amp to adjust volume.  Only time I adjust volumes in software is when I need to set one thing lower or higher than another or if I'm just browsing the internet when it doesn't matter.  You are technically correct which is the best kind of correct (lol Futurama quote).

Some people are crazy and spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on single items, me.... I'm not crazy though because I spent thousands on many many cheap items haahhahHAHAHAHA.

Agreed, set the amp at a good higher listening level then adjust in software.  When doing a specific listening session then set software to max.

High end would be something like:

Amp: Headamp GSX MK2 ($3k) (Normal Headphones)
AMP: Mjolnir Audio Carbon CC ($6.9k) (Electrostatic Headphones like Stax)
Dac: Merum Pavane with Dac 3 chips (~$6k)
Atmos Processor: Smyth Realiser A16 ($4.2k)

Mid-range would be something in the $1-2k zone

you can turn the volume low enough so its not too loud but i dont think you would really benefit too much from them with a dt990 but since you planning to upgrade in the future its fine. i think you should consider just getting the amp for now since "low priced" dacs imo dont really offer that much of a benefit unless you are having interference issues with your pc
