Taiwan's GlobalWafers to build $2 billion foundry in Texas

KeeperofDusk

Summary

Taiwan's GlobalWafers (third largest semiconductor manufacturer with 16% market share) to build $2 billion foundry in Texas, expanding investment to $5 billion overtime.

Article also includes a brief walkthrough of the process of making semiconductors as well as an overview of the current global semiconductor market

According to a GlobalWafers statement on the investment, “At full build-out, the multi-staged, 3.2 million-square-foot silicon wafer factory will be the largest facility of its kind in the USA and among the largest in the world along with secured abundance of land to support any required further growth."

My thoughts

It's an extremely huge deal for a foundry to be built in the US by a major semiconductor manufacturer, especially of this scale.

In addition, I haven't seen a summary of the actual process of making semiconductors before, which is fascinating.

Those DoD contracts be popping.

That and the Chips act was passed. I wonder how much money they were promised. Either way its nice to see things like this happen. I just hope they are able to find a workforce when the FAB is completed.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

To clarify, GlobalWafers is making the bare wafers, they're not doing the "fab" stuff like Intel, Samsung or TSMC. Still it is an important part of the supply chain and having more supply around the world should help in general.

Should also clarify DoD contracts for chips are not often seeked out as the entire production requries transparency that the normal work flow does not accomplish, so a bunch of extra steps are needed to meet the requirments.

GloFlo was able to subsist on them, but no one makes money off them.

Best place. Its not like Texas is running out of all fresh water in next 20years.

Just don't let the residents drink water, it's that easy

jokes aside, this can either go really well, or plummet

Shiiiiit dude Intel has something like 95% recycling efficiency with their water.  There's so much money in this that it's worth becoming your own water treatment plant.

They also don't do these build outs without guaranteed water supply agreements from the municipality.

Well that's nice. The US fabs will need wafers and getting them domestically would be easier, faster and overall better.. (except for the much higher cost that will come to it)
