Asus announces ROG phone 6/pro

Asus has announced their next generation gaming phone, the ROG 6. Comes in two models with varying storage options.

The ROG Phone 6 series includes two devices — the vanilla ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 6 Pro. The phones are more or less identical, featuring 165Hz AMOLED displays, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, massive 6,000mAh batteries, and all the gaming goodies you’ve come to expect from the ROG Phone lineup. Check out the table below for a quick overview of the hardware specifications and the key differences between the two models. The new ROG Phone 6 Pro offers everything you’d expect to see on a flagship gaming smartphone, right from a cool design to powerful internals. The device features a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display that refreshes at an insane 165Hz, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip with the Adreno 730 GPU, up to 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and up to 512GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage.

Like older ROG Phone models, Asus has equipped the ROG Phone 6 with a massive 6,000mAh dual-cell battery that offers 65W wired fast charging support, two USB Type-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, side-mounted air triggers, and stereo speakers. The ROG Phone lineup isn’t known for its camera prowess, and the camera hardware on the latest models leads us to believe that things won’t change this time around either. The ROG Phone 6 features a triple camera setup on the back, which consists of a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera, a 13MP wide-angle camera, and a 2MP macro camera. Over on the front, the device has a 12MP selfie shooter.

The ROG Phone 6 will go on sale in Europe for €999. It will be available in a single 12GB + 256GB configuration. The ROG Phone 6 Pro, on the other hand, will set you back €1,299. Like the vanilla model, it’ll also come in a single configuration with 18GB RAM and 512GB storage. Asus notes that these prices are inclusive of VAT in Europe. The pricing may differ in other regions based on the regional tax variation.

My thoughts

I might actually consider getting this phone, but I want to see how well it handles rooting, hopefully it would be as good as the oneplus in that field once its out.

Yet to see a gaming phone that isn't a meme one way or another... your best bet would be waiting for the BBK phones based on this:

Considering you even need a top of the shelf new phone in the first place. 🙂

ack, Mediatek phones are often on vivos which aren't rootable.

They actually have Dimensity chips coming to lots of different phones now, besides why would you root a solid OS phone? I know BBK products come with it, but I've never seen the need to root my Realme.

It's nice that they write the word "DESIGN" in big bold letters onto that one image. Just to make sure that we understand that this phone was indeed designed that way on purpose and not an accident.

More interested in the Zenfone 9. Sadly they don't do well optimizing their phones battery life.

18GB of RAM?!

Holy cripes that actually has more RAM than most gaming PCs!

What would you even need that much RAM for, in a phone?!

Mobile gaming, lol.

It might be using a hybrid configuration where it's like 12 + 6gb or something. That's what a lot of phones do nowadays.

Like with most super high end specs, they are probably just there for bragging rights.

But other than the slightly higher power consumption that comes with more RAM, I don't see any downside as long as the price is alright, which it seems to be.

I doubt anyone actually needs 18GB of RAM in their phone, but if we push for it now on high end phones, we might have it on midrange phones by the time it actually matters (in maybe like 5-10 years).

It's strange to see gaming phones getting so good, in ways that may make them a good recommendation soon.

The gamery look of the phone is a bit tacky. To each their own, though. She a thicc girl too.

Hopefully they learned after their last release, if I remember correctly, didn't JerryRigEverything manage to break the phone by simply bending it?

Not to mention no water resistance whatsoever in the sim tray

Quote

In a recent durability test conducted by noted Youtuber Zack Nelson, better known as JerryRigEverything, the Asus ROG Phone 5 failed miserably. In his video, the Youtuber was able to bend the gaming smartphone with the sheer strength of his hands, cracking it into pieces and rendering it dysfunctional.

As a side note, the naming of new Snapdragon chips is getting confusing. The "Snapdragon 8+ gen 1" is giving me vibes of "USB 3.2 gen 1" and I don't actually know if it's any faster or just rebranded.
