I need to be able to search (word search) my full PC, including my many drives.
Currently when i search in file explorer or on the taskbar I get limited or no results.
When i search an individual drive I can get results.

I have up to 7 drives at one, not including partitions. So its necessary I can can search all at one at the taskbar.

Can I adjust setting for this, or is there a better application?

You most likely have to customize your windows search settings to include your other drives.

For me what works is if I open file explorer and go to "this PC" and type my search there. This will search across all drives at once. It's not as practical as being able to search stuff from the taskbar but it's something

Total commander has a very extensive search system

It's a windows explorer on steroids, with two panels side by side, kinda like old Norton Commander / Dos Navigator used to be.

You can search in specific file extensions or file names, you can specifiy how deep should look for files (ex go maximum 3-4 folders deep, so it won't scan for files in unlikely locations), add rules like only files created or modified after some time, or only files smaller than 1 MB, you can search for text inside those files or for text in the file names, you can check option to search within archives if you want..

If you have a folder with documents that you want to quickly search text in,  I'd suggest  dtSearch  but it's not a free. It builds a database of the contents inside and you can search for phrases and whatever and it's very fast with the results.

+1

And OP, after you have set a new location in the Indexed locations, you might have to wait a couple of minutes before searching in Windows actually finds anything from the new added location. The index location needs to be build up first. Can take a little while if you have many files at the location you add.
