AT&T is signaling that it has plans to aggressively expand its 1Gbps Internet service offering. Following an announcement earlier this month that it was in talks to bring its 1Gbps Internet service to North Carolina, AT&T announced on Monday that it’s in talks to bring 1Gbps Internet service to 21 new major metropolitan areas, including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.

I'll just name off the cities. For actual coverage regions in the city where fiber will be available, look at the AT&T source.

Cities

-Atlanta

-Augusta

-Austin (Google territory!)

-Charlotte

-Chicago

-Cleveland

-Dallas

-Fort Lauderdale

-Fort Worth

-Greensboro

-Jacksonville

-Houston

-Kansas City (Google territory!)

-Los Angeles

-Miami

-Nashville

-Oakland

-Orlando

-Raleigh-Durham

-St. Louis

-San Antonio

-San Diego

-San Francisco

-San Jose

-Winston-Salem

Looks like AT&T has caught the gigabit Internet bug. GOOD. We NEED more major ISPs to start rolling out gigabit Internet. I know it's AT&T, but this is ultimately a good thing. AT&T is a big enough player in the ISP space, and Comcast/Time Warner, Verizon, Cox, etc. will not just brush this off. Hopefully those other major ISPs will start rolling out gigabit Internet as well, but only time will tell.

(As a side note, so many Florida cities were announced, except for Tampa. D:)

Now, here's what I found interesting: AT&T is rolling out gigabit Internet in both Kansas City and Austin, which are both Google territory. Should be interesting to see how this goes down.

This may be too good to be true. Some are claiming this is nothing more than a promotional stunt to take attention away from Google fibre:

Let's hope the article I posted is incorrect.

I would gladly pay ~$250 per month for gigabit speeds and an unlimited or 2+ TB data cap. That would be fantastic!
