1440p, 240hz 27inch best choice?

Bourtzi
Go to solution Solved by BetteBalterZen,

I have now seen 3 different models of the Odyssey G7 in person, 2 of them being the 32" and 1 of them the 27". All had very pleasing image quality, and the response time and ghosting is very, very good. And since good contrast and rich blacks is something you want, I would 100% recommend the G7.

The backlight in Samsungs monitor, by default, only enables when HDR is turned on but you can go into the OSD and make the backlight always on which will make SDR brightness very good and boost the overall contrast ratio. I've done the same on my CRG9 and SDR content looks so good with the increased brightness.

Hello all,

i recently went for the ASUS vg279qm and quickly realised that 27 inches in 1080p looks very rough.

So I’ve decided to up my budget and upgrade to a 1440p monitor.

The main purpose is gaming, but I want both a relatively high refresh rate and low response time for competitive shooters as well as the good contrast and rich blacks for more immersive games.

I know I can’t have it all, but what would you say is the best compromise? I could consider spending up to 800 gbp on a monitor if it’s worth it.

I’m currently considering:

the odyssey g7, the va panel being enticing but at the same

time being put off by possible ms issues as well as the pronged stand and extreme curvature.

the Gigabyte M27Q-X though this goes for a lower price and I’m worried image quality won’t be there as much

And the ASUS PG279QM, the problem with this being it’s twice the price of the gigabyte one and I doubt it’s worth that much money in comparison with the other two.

honestly I don’t mind going down on the refresh rate, but I don’t want to compromise on image quality too much. If there’s a 144 or 165hz monitor that really tops the above in quality, I’d love to hear it.

any thoughts on the above or new recommendations appreciated.

im pairing this with an rtx 3070ti.

The Gigabyte M27Q-X is the best value option with these specs. Response times and ghosting is good, so are the colors. The PG279QM does everything a bit better, but not twice as good. The G7 can be great if you're lucky and hit one of the good units. This monitor still heavily suffers from quality control issues and other annoying stuff like scanlines etc. Bad backlight bleed is also a common concern with the G7, but that also varies from unit to unit.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

From what I’ve seen I can get like new monitors for around 100 pounds lower than retail. I can also use eBay to order from the entirety of the uk so location shouldn’t be an issue. What are you thinking?

i accidentally clicked the solution button, looking for a way to undo it.

Thanks for the info so far everyone.

@BetteBalterZen I’m more likely to get the g7 after your feedback. Anything to say about the curvature?

well samsung is a great all around panel no doubt. 144hz 1440p monitors even second hand are being flooded in my market right now. you should be able to get an ips 1440p 144hz panel even from aoc, asus, benq or even samsung. ive used all the types of panels but if ips comes around it is a strong suggestion from myside as it can last for years until you have enough or a better gpu to do another display upgrade.

I don’t know how I would feel about the available second hand models. Honestly I’m underwhelmed even by the g7 and all the available new options so I doubt an older, used panel would please me. I’m not thinking of saving money much, more future proofing and getting a lovely image.

it doesn’t feel like there’s much of a good choice available at the moment at all really,  I wish oleds would just hurry up.

I don't  care much about value, I just want something that will feel premium in all categories, but it doesn't seem like I can get that currently.
Strobing is the one thing I don't quite grasp yet when it comes to monitors.

Update, I will most likely be settling for the g7 , as it seems to strike the best balance between the features I want in a monitor, though perfect it is not. Thanks to all for the information.

Well Asus PG279QM is great. Has no strobing which it may not be a deal breaker at all.
