Planning on Building New Rig, Maybe?

whm1974

Since I started drinking soda with ice and fixing my own meals instead of carry out, I've saving some money. As the title says I'm planning on building new rig when it suitable to do so. IE, the GPU Shortage is over and DDR5 is widely available.

My Current Rig was put together in 2013. GPU purchased in Dec 2015. So you see that is long in Tooth for both. If I didn't money as mention in the First Sentence  I could have done this already. At least the GPU anyway.

Knowing that I'm asking for a Crystal Ball, what is a good timetable?

could be months, could be years until gpu prices come down.

you're honestly better of looking for laptops, otherwise buy the rest of the system and use your current GPU until you find one at a decent enough price.

Yeah, if anything, 2022-2023 is the perfect time to buy a really good last gen setup, using all the old AM4+/LGA 1200/DDR4 stuff that will flood the market.

imo just buy a cheap ish gpu that's not too much of a scam.. like 50% more... and like arika said build the rest of it and play games with the gpu you get and wate tell a deal happens. there are plenty of older games that are good...some will say better then what we have now... plus old games are cheap to buy and you said you have little moeny. i hear ya i have 50 boxes of kd and 60 cans of ravioli...

Just buy a laptop, Genuinely the performance is finally there and the pricing is reasonable. I personally bought one when my search for a 6700XT went nowhere for months and decided instead to get a 6800M based laptop. Its already been 2 years with this shortage and any real meaningful rampup of GPU availability isnt coming any time soon till maybe 2023 or 24

Primary Laptop (Gearsy MK4): Ryzen 9 5900HX, Radeon RX 6800M, Radeon Vega 8 Mobile, 24 GB DDR4 2400 Mhz, 512 GB SSD+1TB SSD, 15.6 in 300 Hz IPS display

My 5 year old Envy X360 and 6 year old Acer would like to differ. First of all good luck even trying to get a 6700XT+5800X combo for the price of the 5900HX+6800M combo. Secondly laptops last far far longer than given credit for if you maintain them like you would a PC (Dusting, thermal paste replacement, etc). Expensive? That I do agree on however in this market that isnt something you can complain about when everything is expensive

Said GPU is that expensive due to the market, MSRP is $479 which makes sense with a $450 CPU. My point being is that because of the market laptops are superior. Good luck even getting a GPU for a budget of $800. On the laptop front however? You can pull a 1650 and a 5600H for less than that. If it wasnt for how terrible the market currently is laptops would be an inferior choice to a desktop

My guy the 10 series wasnt that long ago and neither was the 20 series or the RX 5000 series. Those did sell at MSRP until the crypto boom and later the shortages started happening. The point im making is that currently laptops are superior value due to the market we are in. You cant find a GPU at any reasonable price. Try and make a desktop for a $800 to $1200 budget and come out realizing your way overpaying for a GPU when you can grab yourself a laptop for the same price and come out with better hardware with decent availability

Isn't nearly $500 considered cheap now days? For a GPU that is?

Basically, Roughly what a 6600XT can be found for. Hell a 1650 can be found for $300 which is incredibly depressing. Thats why I recommend laptops in this market. Until the prices come down they are an outright better buy

Trust me its hilarious. $649 5600H+1650 combos were all over the place while your average 1650 sold for half that price alone. The 6600M and 3060 mobile are decent for the price points they are in and id recommend them instead of way overpaying a scalper for a half decent GPU

well i dont no what op has now so i dont no what can be reused. ied have to look a prices agane to find a good price to performance. last  time i did this it was a rayzen 2600 and an rx 480...

even a rx 480 will be $300-$400 probably about 50% to 70% more then its worth but when prices drop you still get $150 for it... instead of spending $1000+ on a gpu for then it to be worth $200 when the new stuff pushes the price down.  buts that imo if you think there value in laptops then w/e i own a laptop and it was $1500 and it thermal throttles.. has a 1060m witch is between a 1050 ti and an 1060 in profrmace. dont remember the cpu... dose have rgb thow so there that...

So your complaining about a 6 year old product being bad value. Guy we are in 2022 not 2016. The RX 6800M isnt that far behind a desktop 6700XT. Lower tier GPU's arent that much slower either. Not to mention if your shoving $1500 towards a poorly built product thats on you. Go ahead right now and try building a $800 PC with modern 2022 pricing. Then go look at gaming laptops and come back with the results. Your example is literally from 2018, far before the market conditions making laptops worth it ever became a thing

looking at laptop spec is SUCH a pain!!! when i got mine i spend like weeks looking... they never list what gpu it has... as its not a seling point on laptops its all about cpu...not only that the bettery life... then you got to look up revews of each laptop and hope its not a paied promoting... well as descktop uses well tell you you get this fps with this game with this hardware... so much simpler.. its posable laptops drop in price... but i highly doubt it. $3000k got a laptop was not out of question.

i no i got that 1080 back when it was $750 and that was even hier price that it should have been. i sold my 1060 just before the mining and lost moeny for $100 paid $115 but probly could have sold it for $200 also got 5x 470 for $350 and sold em for $500.. wich now i could have sold em for $1000...my bad luck. i did how ever buy a 1080 for $350 and sold it for $450 atlest. alsomt got a 1070 with water block for $300 that just before the 20seres was announced.. but i was trying to get it cheaper...dam. i alsomt got like 27 r9 280x for like $2200 off ebay wiah i had but it was all my moeny i had at that time. and when i payed $70 each for the 470 it was hard to spend that amount for a r9 280x. and for what i wanted to put them in hp z400 and dell t3500...

Bruh are you having a stroke or typing on a mobile keyboard?

Most laptops only come with 1 stick which is obv retarded but just get an 8gb one and buy another 8gb stick. Some laptops do come with 2 sticks on a 16gb config, on a 32gb config yea you need 2 sticks

Thermal throttling wise just search for a decent laptop that has good cooling or atleast adjustable gpu since cpu wise you can use ryzen master for oc and undervolt, better thermal paste also helps

Battery life should be pretty good on ryzen laptops since they arent nuclear reactors like theyre intel counterparts, though intel on theyre h cpus do offer more performance, intel low power cpus you can just forget those as ryzen goes upto 8 cores but intel only 4 cores even for theyre fakey i7 aka i3

Yea youll have to look at a ton of reviews to find a laptop that doesnt suck ass
