Phone for my mom

Donut417

My mom has the LG Q7+ I believe. Its about 3 or so years old and having issues. The screen turns off on its own, the phone is still powered. Its getting slow to an extent that some times apps dont work. My mom said she tried a factory data resent and it didnt do anything for it. She was looking at the Apple iPhone 12 Mini 64Gig Purple, but NO ONE has that one. They have the higher storage options but this phone is like the top of the budget and if she cant get that color and storage, she doesnt want it.

She is considering just sticking to Android. Im not a fan of Samsung phones, so I was hoping to find something Not Samsung. I was looking at maybe the Google Pixel, thoughts? I need something that works on the T Mobile network. 16 Gigs of storage is fine if it has an SD card slot, with not SD card slot it needs to have more storage. A decent camera would be nice. She mainly plays some mobile games like Double Down Casino and Words with Friend and such.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

pixel could be great for android support, which in return can be great for them getting used to, Apple might be better in some areas.

Samsung has a lot of bloatware and nonsense (not sure on what scale for phones + bloat), but can be nice to use sometimes and some features that are helpful and some that are not fun at all.

We wanted her to go Apple mainly because we all have Apple devices, my dad, me, sister, brother in law, nieces and nephews. It would be easy to train her to use it and iOS is a bit easier to pick up.

I personally adore my Motorola, it just works, which is the highest praise I can give it. When my brother's gf was getting rid of her iphone, she asked what I would recommend and I said a Moto One Ace 5G, good budget price, not budget specs, and it runs stock Android. She seems to love it. The first time she dropped it she was terrified to pick it up for fear that the screen had cracked, not even a scratch on it; fell flat on its screen from 4 ft. I recently upgraded from a Moto G7 plus to a Moto G100 due to battery management issues(when in weather around 0C it would rapidly lose battery, die, then come back to life with the battery life it SHOULD have) and it's honestly amazing. Was ~$479, and is supper snappy and responsive and plenty of storage and huge battery (5000mAh), and the cameras are great and the screen is exceptionally bright(500+ nits) so the old eyes factor is a non-issue.

The only real downside: no real waterproofing (IP53)

It is a somewhat large phone, but I have large hands so it's not a big deal. The G7+ that I upgraded from was the most one-handable phone I've ever had. After 2.5yrs, the battery was also still at 87% health which was nice as well.

I will say that the Ace is currently stuck on Android 10 which kinda sucks, the G100 is android 11 right away which is WORLDS better.

Other than the $200 price difference. And this is kinda the reason I went to Apple, because I never likes the lack of updates on Android devices. Is the Ace getting the Android 11 update? What is even the latest version of Android to begin with?

Android 12, coming this January and later, some newer models might already have it. LTT have done a video on the beta version.

If she used a Q7+ and considered the iPhone mini, I don't think she wants a larger phone.

The Pixel 4a is similar in overall size to the Q7+. It looks unlikely Google will make small phones again.

She will have to settle for what she can get. I tried to convince her to go for the iPhone SE if she didnt want to spend the money but she was being difficult and only wanted a purple iPhone. If her current phone gives out 100% its not like I dont have a spare phone laying around and if push comes to shove Ill buy me a new phone and give her my XR.

Just an update. Told my mom about the Motorola device. She wasn't happy that it was going to be larger. She then said that the color of the iPhone doesnt matter and so I think we might be picking up a 13 mini at some point. Im pushing her to the 13 for the fact it will have the longest support as she's not going to want to upgrade a device for a while.
