Is it bad to be looking at a screen all day?

Trail Mixorz

What if you're watching porn though?

Well, you don't have to worry too much then now won't you? I find myself quite happy with that. :P

And that is one more reason, why we use Netbooks at our school from the 5th to the 13th Grade. Let us destroy the young children eyes with really bad Dell Netbook screens!

At least they aren't CRT monitors anymore...

Had one up to 2012. Incidentally, I'm near-sighted.

If you SIT stairing a screen 90% of the day it will most likely affect your weight

I've been sitting in front of a computer for about 12 hours a day for the past 5 years now. I haven't gained weight, but I did lose some so I guess you're somewhat right? Not that anybody would complain about losing weight.

My eye sight hasn't changed at all either, I wear glasses(from long before my first PC) and get exams every 6 months or so. The big thing, is the blue-ish glow at night, but you get used to it. That monitor hurts your eyes is just a myth, CRTs were bad for a whole set of different reasons, but LCDs barely do anything.

I can't use those glasses because I wear glasses normally and don't want contacts.

I'm in the same situation. I use a program called F.lux. DL it at justgetflux.com

On the scale of work and recreation related hazards, I'd say this is pretty low.

Guys do the "computer" glasses help anything?=

 (gaming glasses)

I got some last year and I don't wear glasses normally so in all honesty I don't know how much benefit comes from normal glasses and how much is added value from being "computer glasses", but the truth is I can deal with long days of PC use (8 hour job, then work on college assignments through the night) without as big as impact as before.

My eyes have always been sensitive to bright lights and the glasses certainly help.

You can get sear-sighted if you stare at screens (or anything that's really close to you, like books) for most of the day. Not necessarily will (like a lot of "researchers" say), but you can get myopic. I've become slightly myopic (more-so on my left eye, which happens to be the eye closer to the monitor I stare most of the day).

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

I use, like you guys mentioned, f.lux. It is really a good program for people that use computers alot.
I have found an app for android named "lux auto brightness", and it does the same thing, and can even make your screen brightness go "sub zero" with a dark filter if you want.

I am near-sighted, and I think most people from my generation will become or already are. Looking at screens, in addition to not going out, will probably make you near-sighted

EDIT: 400th post :D

Staring at things tends to be bad... Still, it's not as bad as staring at the sun.

Your eyes'll get used to focusing at a close point. If you want to avoid temporary nearsightedness, try looking out your window every now and then. Every time a new match starts, every time a customer leaves, every time your boss isn't looking. If you don't have a window, look at the other side of the room and stop it with your excuses...

Other than temporary nearsightedness, I'm sure modern monitors, TV's, and smartphone screens hardly strain your eyes. Unless, of course, they're too bright.

  • 2 weeks later...

It is bad if you find your eyes getting tired. Your eyes have the most active msucles in your body, you need to give them a break every now and then.
