1tb gen 4 or 2tb gen 3

ripper101

Should I get a Samsung 980 Pro Gen 4 1tb for $185 or a 970 Pro Gen 3 2tb for $230 if I mainly do gaming?

970 Pro for sure.

It might have sequential speeds lower, yet that does really not matter right now.

I edit my posts more often than not

Capacity all the way. There aren't any games available for PC that use direct storage yet, and probably won't be for a few years. By the time there are, we'll know how much of an affect it has, and Gen 4 drives will drop enough in price (hopefully) that they'll actually make sense. Right now, unless you are doing something that genuinely requires a ton of bandwidth (i.e. datacenter tasks or heavy virtualization), Gen 4 drives don't make sense to get.

Get a cheaper SN550 or SN750 or SN750SE .... or others like sabrent rocket

$195  sn550 : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/zNK2FT/western-digital-blue-sn550-2-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-wds200t2b0c

$200  rocket  : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/LxXnTW/sabrent-2-tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-sb-rocket-2tb

Won't make any difference when it comes to games ...

Capacity matters more, even though the 970 Pro is mostly there for MLC's longer life in theory than performance.

2TB all the way, and as @mariushm pointed out, there are much better, cheaper options if you're using it for game storage. Honestly, there will be even cheaper options than that come Black Friday. You're really not gaining anything by buying a "faster" drive, unless you like to run synthetic benchmarks and stare at the numbers.
