What game made you upgrade your computer?

DarkWillow

I'd upgraded with Metro Exodus (at Very High setting) in mind, from a i7 3960X + Vega64 to an R9 3900X + RX 6900XT (replaced the Vega64), now even capable of Metro Exodus PC Enhanced @ 3840x1080 144Hz (upgraded my monitor a couple of years back).

I bought a Valve Index just to play Half Life Alyx. Haven't really used it for anything else.

I had to pay an electrician $2k just to play Far Cry 6.

Well sort of. This happened to be the first game I played after I upgraded my home theater. The combination of 10900K & 3090 PC with all the amps and speakers was too much for a single 15a circuit. So I had to install another dedicated circuit just to play.

1800w is enough for virtually any system, monitor and speakers.  Are you running something else on the circuit?  Power hungry bulb-type projector?

Heck, I replaced all the lights in my house with LED fixtures because I wanted to lower power draw across the spectrum so I wouldn't ever have issues with maxing out a 15a breaker.

Unless they're all tied to a single 15a circuit, it shouldn't be an issue. Yes, switching to LED is always a good idea for all sorts of reasons, but it wouldn't help if they're on a different circuit than what the PC is on.

This would be a question for a qualified electrician, but if the wiring supports it, you might be able to upgrade that circuit to 20a. But don't do this without an expert qualified assessment or else you risk burning the house down!

That's like trying to Glow UP so you can get with the hot chick you've always had a crush on....and then she gives you herpes.

It's a simple question.  need 12 gauge wiring minimum for a 20 amp, iirc.  14 gauge for 15 amp.  So unless your builder has the forethought to make everything 20 amp originally, or at least wire the entire house 12 gauge...you're ripping out and replacing wires.

A single game wont make me upgrade ,however once i find multiple games suffering from performance I find unacceptable, AND a new gen of GPU has recently released with normal (pre 2018) pricing, thats when ill upgrade.

As such the last upgrade I had was from a 780 classified to a used 1080ti right after the 2080 and 2080ti launched. The 2080ti being a overpriced ripoff and the 2080 being no better than the 1080ti, combined with most recent games starting to bring the 780 to its knees meant it was time to upgrade.

My next upgrade will be purely based on the PC industries pricing. Once things return to pre 2018 pricing ill likely end up getting a full new build to replace my current rig in its entirety.

However, in the mean time ill be upgrading the GPU only as soon as 2 things happen. Pricing returns to pre 2018, and i get a hold of a new display (likely a 42" OLED) This will not be entirely based on gaming performance per say, but rather the fact the new display with be 4k 120hz rather than 1080p, and require HDMI 2.1 ,,thus the 1080ti wont be suitable.

Control

I went from an i5 4440 and GT 635 to one with an i5 9600K and RTX 2060 Super so that I could experience that game. It was probably the best $1000 I spent in 2020.

The original Doom in 1993 was a slide show on my 386 so I built a 486 and 6 months later upgraded that to a Pentium.

Doom II was actually the reason for my very first upgrade. I had a 486DX2 66MHz so the CPU wasn't the issue but I only had 4MB of RAM and during the fight against the final boss the game turned into a slideshow. For example after firing it took about 15 seconds for the sound effect to play and then 15 seconds after that the firing animation would play. After doubling the amount of RAM to 8MB the game ran without any issues.

I had a nice run between Doom and MS Flight Simulator 2000 of everything running great mainly because by 1994 I had converted my 3D rendering from Amigas to PCs so any upgrades were paid for with my hardware budget.  When the PCs weren't working I played games on them.

By 2000 I had so much work that I played mainly on a PS2/3 and that did not change until 2007 when I separated my work PCs from my gaming PCs.

I'm running a 13 channel audio system with four 15" subwoofers and a 88" OLED. That can all run on the circuit by itself but when you add the PC it can and does trip the breaker on a 15A circuit.

Fair enough.  That's an extreme audio setup.

The last time I upgraded my PC for a game was way back in 2008 for Stalker: Clear Sky. I don't remember what I was upgrading to but I remember going all out that PC 🙃
