i7-2600 non k still good for 2014+ gaming?

Go to solution Solved by fringie,

You can't OC the i7 2600 (you can change the BCLK modifier though), so the statement it doesn't OC well isn't quite right :P.

Just because that motherboard isn't a high end extreme board doesn't mean it doesn't OC well because it does. I have an Asus z77 lx v which is similar but a little lower end (middle end motherboard) and I have a stable 4.6GHz CPU OC and 2000mhz ram oc which is above average.

The i7 2600 will do you fine till Sky Lake. I'd upgrade the CPU then if I were you. I personally plan on upgrading my CPU when sky lake comes out.

I think OC'ing gets you like 10 extra FPS (BF4 can use all 4 cores + HT so OC'ing probably makes a more notable difference there)? It also means you can do more demanding things when you game, sometimes I do the borderlands 2 hack so I can have 2 instances of borderlands 2 playing on my PC so an irl friend can play which I think it'd make a big difference. OC'ing isn't the biggest deal in the world but it does gives you an effective boost of like 15-20% (it's not all about the mhz).

This are my current specs

CPU:- i7-2600 non K
CPU coller:- Purex DLX-CW919 LGA1150/1155/1156 CPU Cooler $9.99 lol.gif
Mother Board:- Asus P8Z77-V LK 1155 Chip Set ( Missing the i/o shield biggrin.gif  )
Ram:- 4*4 16 GB DDR3... low profile; DDR= Double Data Rate. 800MHz in CPU-z is the same as DDR3-1600
SSD:- Two 128 GBSamsung 840 pro
GPU:- PNY GTX 460 1GB XLR8
PSU:- Corsair CX Series 600 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Bronze
Case:- Corsair Carbide Series 200R Compact ATX Case CC-9011023-WW
Fans:- Intake:- Front, Bottom, Side Panel (blowing on to the GPU ... freakin loud); Exhaust:- Back, 2 on top... so 6 in total, the 4 fans are generic Foxconn 4pin PWM fans and the other 2 came with case corsair 3 pin fans... (using cable splitter)
Display:- HP ZR2740w Resulation 2560*1440 60Hz... one heck of a monitor

If I get a GTX 780 and a Noctua NH D-14 CPU air cooler; can I play games with ultra settings?

If I want to overclock the CPU I have two issues:-

1. non k processors dosen't OC that well
2. Asus P8Z77-V LK is not a great overclocking MB

What do you guys think? should I get the GTX 780 with my current non k CPU, and try to overclock it ? (At least I can reuse the GTX 780 GPU and the Noctua NH D-14 air cooler in future build)

Am I going to get better performance combining GTX 780 with i7-3770k / i5-4670k / i7-4770k and with a better overclocking motherboard??

Is the i7-2600 non k is a strong enough CPU to support GTX 780 so that overclocking and good motherboard wont even count?

The only reason I am even thinking about overclocking the CPU because I am not sure if its going to bottleneck the GTX 780 GPU.

Yeah it is fine, an i7 is overkill for general gaming so you are fine.

lol, You will be fine with an i7-2600. I'm currently using a i5-2500K with my GTX 780. As the user above me said i7 is overkill.

EDIT: No, you wont benefit from getting a new processor or motherboard. You should be able to overclock fine with it.

Yep, CPUs have gone almost nowhere since the introduction of Sandy Bridge, you'll be fine for a couple more years. If I were you I would wait to upgrade to the successor of Broadwell

Yeah, not even starting to be a problem for you. You probably have like 2 more releases before it starts to show it's age.

Why do you always die right after I fix you?

It may be stock and a non-K version but the average Turbo aspect of up to near 3.6-3.9ghz+ at most times while your playing so I'd doubt at all it would bottleneck anything but the best of a dualGPU situation if that.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

What you might think may happen after one or two years?? the games might exhaust the CPU's even more?

Lets not forget the low level access benefits that DX12/OpenGL will have in the future.

Could give a lot of life back into "on the edge of bottlenecking" CPU's.

Well it is for some people who need the extra performance for some reason or another. And it is free performance so why not do it I think.

How do they compare to like a 4770k? like a i7 970 to a 4770k, in multi-threaded applications like video editing and rather single-core applications like gaming?

The first gen i7s have better IPC than Vishera, and the 8350 performs quite well in gaming so you can deduct that Nehalem is good too
