PSU Ticking Noise

ilstratic

Hello beauties, my setup which I've had for almost a year now is working fine as it should. One thing that is worrying me tho, my power supply keeps on doing a faint tick every couple of seconds. At first I thought it was my router right beside my pc but now I'm almost sure it is my PSU making the noise.

Anything I should be worrying about? Can I fix this? etc...I hope this is only a minor issue for me.

Thanks.

It's random or it repeat every X seconds?

Maybe any cable/thing on the desk got into the PSU fan?

the ticks in between i would say is exactly 1 second apart. But the number of ticks consecutively is different every time it starts ticking again. So for example it would be like, tick1... next second tick2... next second... tick3........no ticks for a couple of seconds, then again, but this time its 7 ticks consecutively in 7 seconds, and then it stops for a couple of seconds, and then again like 5 consecutive ticks in 5 seconds.

Nothing is in the PSU fan.

Sounds like some sort of protection in the PSU tripping.
What is the rest of of the system, and what specific power supply is this?

So the rest of the system is not an intense build at all for the PSU

- ROG B550-F GAMING MoBo

- Ryzen 7 3800X CPU

- GTX 1050 GPU

And the power supply I don't know if you are going to be surprised is the Gigabyte P850GM.

Personally, this system should not be tripping ANY power protections.
I would replace the unit, as it sounds like something bad could happen any moment due to something being tripped with little to NO load on the system.
Use this guide to select what power supply you choose next.

Personally, I would not pick anything under a B tier.
remember that wattage =/= quality.

So in the end, you think there is something tripping a power protection when nothing should be happening? There's nothing to fix this?

I seriously wouldn't recommend opening up a power supply to fix anything, knowing the relation behind this power supply I would assume that it's some sort of internal issue. Opening and tinkering with the unit might result in literal death if you are unaware of what you're doing. Capacitors and systems within that system of components can hold enough power after being unplugged to seriously harm someone.

If it's ticking, I seriously wouldn't run it on any system, regardless of the load, that's most likely a protection in the unit that is tripping, which is never good...

If you have purchased it within the past 4 months, I would recommend trying to get a refund for it, and then picking something along the lines of a MSI MPG 650w.

I got it last year. Could there be no issue at all?

There could be no issue, but the power supply could also literally take the whole system with it if the power protection fails.

Yea I got the Gigabyte P850GM last year and this summer all of a sudden a bunch of bad reports came out for the exact PSU I have. I thought since I had the PSU for many months now with no problem, I wasn't concerned but now with this tick I am slightly.

It is not only your PSU, but also the 750 model of that PSU that has the exact same falures.
It's overall an awful power supply.
I would seriously replace it, or haggle with whatever retailer you bought it from to get it out of your house.
The meme about it literally being a bomb is serious - not only that, but it's falure rate is obsurdly high with little to no usage on the PSU.

If it goes, it's likely that it will take your whole system with it.

Damn, y'all think the retailer might bargain?

P sure you should be able to get your money back, either from retailer or gigabyte - but im not 100%, but since its known to be a defective and dangerous design i think thats how that goes usually...

Doubt it. Go to the manufacturer first.
They are most likely going to be more lienient than the retailer.

Double check that it's actually the power supply that is making the ticking sound. If you have any HDDs in the system unplug them as they can often make a ticking noise and it can be easy to mistake that for noise from other areas of the PC.

If the ticking noise is coming from the power supply it is most likely the fan motor. Clicking from the fan motor isn't necessarily a issue, it's really just an annoying noise. If the noise only started recently then it could be the fan motor is dying. If it's an issue with the fan you should be able to contact Gigabyte for a replacement, and you are likely also eligible for a replacement under their not-a-recall-recall due to the PSUs exploding anyway. Though really you're probably better off replacing it with a different unit that isn't going to explode.

If it was a protection tripping the PSU would completely shut off. It wouldn't be making a ticking noise.
