Is avast free?

There is a free version of Avast which I have heard recommended a lot. Kaspersky is excellent, but not free. Some recommend MSE, but in my experience it isn't too great. AVG Free, Avira and Bit Defender Free are also good options if you are looking for a free AV.

Malwarebytes Prois probably my #1 anti-virus. Not only because its definitions are extremely good, but also because it blocks a wide array of malware without consuming much resources.

Malwarebytes is not an anti-virus, it's an anti-malware. Which means that you can run it with an anti-virus running alongside it.

I'm currently using:

BitDefender Anti-virus

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

ZoneAlarm Firewall.

I have a copy of ESET Nod32 that I plan to install, but I encountered an issue when I didn't uninstall BitDefender first, so I'm testing it out in a virtual machine first, and then moving to my host.

I liked Avast! when I had the paid Internet Security version for a month. The free one didn't really cut it after that.

WebRoot Secure Anywhere is one that I also liked, but they don't have a free version.

I've never had any issues with Microsoft Security Essentials (or Windows Defender in Windows 8).

Dr. Web isn't too bad. A few things I wasn't crazy about, so I didn't keep it too long.

AdAware was nice, clean and basic anti-virus.

There is no "best anti-virus" because they all offer you different feature sets. It depends what you are looking to get out of the anti-virus before anyone can tell you what is right for you.

Malwarebytes could and can be classified as both. Everything else has high CPU time when actively scanning, something Malwarebytes seems to be notoriously good at. Tho this day in age, almost any "anti-virus" software can be classified as "anti-malware". Since none of these scanners work dependently on looking for virus signatures. You don't need to install anything aside Malwarebytes Pro, other than to having a little bit of common sense. I personally can't be easily infected (black hat background) when I run no protection, tho I do run Malwarebytes anyways just in case.

I say this every time and I could write an essay on this but in short, I think the slightly less popular ones are the best ones and there isn't a "best" one, just good and bad ones.

There's always cases where one will perform better then the others, but it isn't consistently a single one; Sometimes X will be the fastest and most efficient in preventing a virus where Y will just completely fail to realize you've gotten something until it's too late and then the next time it might be completely reversed!

As for why I say you should avoid the most popular ones? I'm not saying it because I think popular = bad, but rather because the same reason Windows generally gets more viruses and malware than any other OS - Virus makers most probably tend to look for vulnerabilities in common antivirus software they can abuse in order to allow their viruses to bypass or disable the antivirus. A good but lesser known antivirus thus should in theory be less at risk for this, granted it's still good enough to recognize the bad code and prevent it from infecting your machine.

Personally though, I'm running Eset on my desktop, not because I think it's the best, because there are a handful excellent ones out there, but simply because that's the one I prefer and I haven't really had any problems with it whatsoever.

Kaspersky is generally regarded as the best AV client available in information security circles.

I'm an AVG volunteer, so I'm biased... AVG.  But imo Avast, Bitdefender, AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials are good.  However, it depends on what you mean by best?  I see best as the best antivirus with the performance to protection ratio.

I recommend Avast or MSE. MalwareBytes is good when you need to fix an issue, although it's new version is pretty shit.

Currently I'm using Webroot (PC gamer edition) and Malwarebytes Premium. Works flawlessly.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Motherboard: MSI B550 Tomahawk RAM: Kingston HyperX Predator RGB 32 GB (4x8GB) DDR4 GPU: EVGA RTX3090 FTW3 SSD: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512 GB NVME | Samsung QVO 1TB SSD  HDD: Seagate Barracuda 4TB | Seagate Barracuda 8TB Case: Phanteks ECLIPSE P600S PSU: Corsair RM850x

I am a gamer, not because I don't have a life, but because I choose to have many.

There's nothing wrong with Malwarebytes 2.0 other than a few minor GUI bugs. It's the same exact scanner just with an improved front end. I haven't had much issue with it since I installed it. All they really did was make the software more pleasing to the eye.

Did I say that it was any different or that it's detection properties were worse? I can't stand it's tacky new GUI and layout. I still use it on occasion if I absolutely have to. In my opinion, and remember, this is my opinion, it looks terrible. I know you are going to reply saying that doesn't matter, but you will be stating the obvious.

You're free to express your own opinion, but I think that it looks better than most. Avast for an example has a messy GUI, AVG has a very tacky GUI. Malwarebytes is simplistic (always has been), no unneeded bullshart that makes it hard to use. Regardless how it looks, it's still one of the easiest (among being one of the most effective) antivirus protection software's available. The whole using the built in standard Windows controls layout was getting old. Tho personally, I don't use it for its looks. I use it because of its extremely fast scanning engine and good definition database.

Alright, the Best one is Microsoft Security Essentials, I've been using this since i acknowledged it (acutally 2010), I acutally got no problem with MSE..

before that i was using Avast,

but i use AdwCleaner all the times, it helps to remove junkware and some kinda Toolbar something like that.

I recommend using MSE!!  :)  :)
