Upgrade 3070 to 3080 for $350 (high Hz 1080)

Hello lovely community. Long time lurker here. Recently (~3 months ago) I was able to snag an Asus Dual RTX 3070 for $650, brand new. Since my old GTX 1080 died 4 months ago, I had no option but go for the 3070.

So far so good, card is great, thermals are ok/mediocre. Decent overclocker (2020 Core @0.975mV, +1000MHz mem) despite the compact cooler.

However, i'll have a chance to snag an Asus TUF 3080 for $1050USD this week (brand new too). This would allow me to upgrade my 3070 for that by only splurging ~$350 more. I would sell the 3070 to a close friend for the same money I paid for it.

My question is: is it even worth it thinking about doing that? While I game at 1080p, my monitor goes up to 280Hz and I think my system could drive the 3080:

10900k (mediocre 5GHz all-core oc, 4.7GHz uncore)

16GB RAM (4400Mhz)

850W Thermaltake GF1 PSU

I could also get an Asus STRIX 3070 for $770USD. That would mean paying $120USD for a better cooler/PCB and staying with a 3070.

Tips/thoughts? Thanks in advance!

To be completely honest, I dont see any reasons for upgrading here. 3070 to 3080 is an upgrade but for I am not sure if its worth $350, I would suggest waiting for newer cards to be released before considering to upgrade.

What benefit do you think the 3080 will give above the 3070?  is this benefit worth it?

Going from 230 to 260 fps, for example.  Not worth it to me.  Is it to you?

Given that it's already so extremely hard to see a difference between 144hz and 240hz screens I would not even bother thinking about an upgrade like this.

Thanks to everyone! You're totally right. I don't think I even fully use the RTX 3070 and i'm quite happy with its performance.

In that case, would shelling out $100USD more for the STRIX 3070 make any sense? I think i'll end up buying another GPU anyways so my friend can get my 3070 (and 3060s are just $100 less than the 3070, so we would rather go for the 3070).

In my mind, the better cooler might be worth it just for the sake of having a quieter card.

I would say no. There is no guarantees that new card will outperform your card, nor run cooler.

Fair enough... I was expecting a cooler card considering the beefier/better cooler. Mine goes up to 75ºC, a little noisy too. Is the current OC I have any good? If so, I can just look into swapping the fans...

It is worth it for the vram alone.

I use more than 8gbs in a lot of games and in tests that I have done with modded textures(8k) the experience suffers(not smooth) even on a 3080.

Also you have a i9 10900k and I would consider a 3080 minimum for one. One of mine uses a 3090 and the other 2080 ti.

If overclocking is your thing maybe hold out for a ROG Strix version. They have 121% on the power limit and can pull over 450 watts with the stock bios. At 1080p mine can beat my EVGA 3080 ti at 1080p but not a 1440p.

yes, do the upgrade and it's not even close, even if you don't use the 3080 fully it's about 1:1 increase in price:performance and the 3080 will have better resale value

The 3080 will allow you to keep your desired level of performance for longer (more ‘future proof’ if you like). For example with the 3070 you might need to upgrade in 2-3 years whereas you might get an extra year or two from the 3080.

It also depends on the type of games you play. If it’s mainly less demanding older games / esports then the 3070 is sufficient especially at 1080p. If you want to play the latest AAA games (with RT) then an upgrade to the 3080 is a good move.

For 1080p I wouldn't even consider a rtx 3080, that's crazy.

I have the same GPU with a 280mm  radiator hooked to my CPU with no power limits set as intake that dumps the heat into my case right at my GPU and I haven't seen mine go past 65c in game yet.

Now if you have the free cash to burn and want to help out a friend here I totally understand that and kudos to you for being a good person. We need more people like you with this market being so crazy.
