Meshify 2 + Noctua NF-A14 Fans - A crazy resonance / loudness when installed

NegZero

Fans are pretty quiet. Even at 1000-1250 RPM. As soon as you install them on the front of the case they make a crazy loud noise due to something I can't quite nail down. I tried taping the open 120mm mounting slots, but it's still loud. Has anyone solved for this? It starts as soon as the fan gets about 5mm from the case mount (video below)

It's not a vibration issue, and there are rubber anti-vibration mounts installed. It's the way the air flows through the case mount area I believe.

The NF-A14 fan blades sit fairly close to the front of the frame and are probably too close to the case frame. Some washers or a gasket to separate the fan and case a bit should reduce the noise. https://www.amazon.com/Coolerguys-140mm-Anti-Vibration-Rubber-Gasket/dp/B07CGPNHM4

do you get the same noise if the fan is facing the opposite direction?  (just to test)

It's a Fractal Meshify 2, so I can't mount in front of the bracket unfortunately. I ordered some Arctic P14 fans to see if they fare differently before I start messing with gaskets / washers / casemods / etc. I'll circle back with results.

I had exactly the same problem in the define r6, a figured out it was a combination of the bracket being abit flexible and the 120mm mounting causing air turbulence, i ended up just getting 120mm fans, alternatively you could cut away the 120mm mounting.

wow i wound not have thought a 1200 rpm fan can cause that much air turbulence with that little of blockage... you would have thought it be 2000+ rpm.

Just find an rpm-zones where its not annoying. There are no fans that perform perfectly in all cases with full rpm range.

It's totally the Noctuas. Just installed 5 Arctic P14 PWM fans (3 intake, 2 exhaust) and all 5 running @ 1700RPM is quieter than 1 Noctua @ 600RPM. It's just a weird way the Noctua makes the air flow.

I think this is what I'm going to go with. Haven't played with fan curves yet, but even at top speed (which I won't run) it's better 🙂

I have this problem with them in my case as well, made a post about it a long time ago. Anything over 45pct or so buzzes. Solution for me was spacing the fan away from the case by 1/4" or so. It only does it on intake for me, exhaust is fine.
