What major to take ?

I will be going to engineering college in like 2-3 months and I am in a dilemma what to take as my major ? I really like Physics and Mathematics (not so much in Chemistry). I had intially thought of taking Computer engineering since I am really interested in computers, the way they work. But recently my interest in Aircrafts grew, (like they seem pretty cool and from what I could look up on the internet you need to be interested in physics and mathematics for that) so I am not sure what major to take ? When I was in middle school I even tried making an aircraft (smol rc one) which wasn't lets just say successful but it did give me so insight on physics at that time

When you say how computers work what do you mean by that? Also did you take AP physics?

If you are in the US it's possible you don't have to declare your major at the very beginning. Most of the engineering core should introduce you to the different fields and you can choose a suitable major from there. In general, Electrical, Aerospace and Mechanical would be the most math and physics intensive. Computer, Industrial/Manufacturing and Chemical Engineering a bit less, and than Software or Environmental would have the least mathematics.

so lemme clarify I am not from USA. But yeah the physics I had to study in high school and for college entrance examinations was similar or higher in level compared to AP physics.

Like I wanna be able to design CPUs or GPUs in the future i.e. like get a Job at AMD or Nvidia or Intel.
The Colleges I will be applying to have 2 courses one called Computer Science and Engineering and another one called Electrical Engineering. But I am not sure in which department they teach how a CPU or a GPU works. On the website of the Electrical Engineering department there was a little description of what you would learn as a student, which says " The programme offers sufficient flexibility so that the students can undertake various elective courses that provide exposure in various disciplines of EE such as Telecommunications, Microelectronics and VLSI design, Power Electronics and Power System, Control System and Embedded Systems." But I couldn't a similar description on the other departments website.

Gotcha, have you considered that you will probably need a Masters degree if you want to work at Intel, AMD, or Nvidia?

yeah I asked someone and they said you would need some sort of postgraduate degree, one of them even suggested me that you would have to a PhD in computer architechture

Also, I have interest in that kinda stuff (learning how a computer works) but from what I saw in the list of courses offered in the CSE programme they do learn about it but in the Electrical Engineering department they even learn how to design their own chips. And pay/ salary matters, so say after graduating I wanna do a job, where I am from the salary is pretty low as compared to that of a "Computer Engineer". Right after graduating the salary can be anywhere from 400USD per month (before taxes) to 1000 USD per month (before taxes) and that's a big OOF

What country are you in? $1000/month is incredibly low for an engineer like unheard of.

That's interesting, and yeah the US would pay much much more than that. If you had a MS or PhD within 8 years you could easily be making $200k/yr and upwards of $300k/yr after 15 with a PhD

BTW is there any chance of getting hired by say a foreign firm right after graduation ? Because from what I have asked my fellow Indians who have worked for MNCs in India have complained about the toxic work culture here comparing that in other Western Countries the work environment is much better and not as toxic, so I really don't want a Job in India

Yeah like someone who takes the Computer Science and Engineering major (a fresher) gets like 90k USD per year but other engineers are underrated and not employed at all. Like my dad runs a shop and lemme tell ya he earns a lot more than 1k USD per month, so even if I were to keep his shop running, I would make more money.

So If i really wanted to pursue my dreams, either I have to go for a postgraduate degree or do CSE. Thanks for all the information, I am now clearer as what major to take and will definitely post an update once I get to college.

PS: I just really want to get outta this country. Infact I will be giving SAT this novemeber. Since to get in an engineering college in India you have to give this engineering entrance exam which is a big ass rat race, since 2-3 Million kids give it every year but only tens of thousands get admitted into good colleges. And the results for this will be out around October this year.
In India sometimes I think if a kids life is just a big ass rat race, first you are pressurised by parents into scoring more marks in school, then to get into college you have to go for extra tutors for 2-3 years like your life depends on it, then in college you have to get a good GPA or else no gud Job, then in life the usual race for money.

A physics degree will give you the most career flexibility. A good physics curriculum will cover many different topics including mechanics, electrical, thermo, optics, particle ... the list goes on. If you gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals and develop good problem solving skills you can go into any technical field with a physics degree. Specific degrees like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science are far less flexible.

 

One more piece of advice, no matter what degree path you choose, enroll in programming classes first semester and keep taking new ones. IMO programming is the most universal and necessary skill needed for any technical career. I will not be surprised if it become a minimum requirement for most jobs in the next decade.

No matter the job, all first-time hires will spend their first year or two learning the career specific field. Learning things they did not learn in school. Instead of a Uni in India have you ever considered taking a program from another country? A lot of universities are now offering online programs so you wouldn't have to move where you're from. Depending on which country the degrees get varying levels of international recognition. Like in Canada you typically can take your qualifications/Education credentials globally.

 

There's people from all over the world in my software development diploma program right now for that exact reason. Including some from India.

 

It's not a cheap option but if you have the means of paying for it degrees from other countries can go a long way.
