Is it smarter to buy 10700k now

So as the title says im wondering if its worth buying the 10700k or waiting for 12th gen intel and 5th gen amd to come out and then buy either them or the 10700k for cheaper?

For $300 I'd say it's a fine purchase now, not great, not bad.  If you need a machine now, buy one.  If not, wait.

I'd go for an 11700K or a 5800X. I don't think a 10700K is worth it new. If you got it used or something, maybe.

 

Don't worry about 12th Intel or Zen 4, for that matter, at this point. New architecture on new node with new socket and new chipset with new DDR5 RAM. There will be bugs and other issues, and the prices are going to be insane. It won't be a good value, and unless you've got more money than you know what to do with, you're better off sitting the next gen out.

Agree with this for the most part, except 10 series might still be worth it if you can get steep discounts like they had at Microcenter a while back.

 

$250 for a 10700K or $175 for a 10600K is hard to really argue against, presuming quality motherboards aren't too hard to find.

What is your use case?

 

If you're mainly interested in gaming, the 10700K has basically the same performance as the 11700K - they trade blows in titles. According to Hardware Unboxed, across 32 games, at 1080p, you're looking at a 1% difference on average. At 1440p, it's a tie.

 

If you're using the CPU for productivity, both the 11700K and 5800X offer better performance and PCIe Gen 4.

 

As for the future releases, I wouldn't worry about it for the reasons mentioned above. DDR5 pricing is going to be ludicrous and given that Intel is only planning on launching a few SKUs at first, they probably are going to have supply issues similar to what we saw with Zen 3. Basically, you won't be able to buy the CPUs for the first few months anyway.

Yeah, that was kind of the direction I was going with getting it used. Even if it's just $100 cheaper, I think there's enough value in the faster single core perf and such to warrant going for the 11700K/5800X.

 

Also, if it's something you want to keep for a few years, it's always better to not compromise initially, at least to a degree. I wouldn't necessarily lay down multiple hundreds extra on a CPU, but $100 extra for a much better CPU is a sound investment.

Agree. Again, personally I'd go for the 5900x even though it would be mostly excess.

Eh if you dont overclock or undervolt but its only 10-20$ above the non k variant

 

Ok i guess if you overclock/undervolt it

 

 

Though the 5800x or 11700 will def beat that cpu so unless you get a really good deal on it i wouldnt suggest the 10700k

if you are need a pc now and won't buy next gen gpus in a year, 10700k is ok, not great, not bad.

 

if you need a pc now and plan to buy next gen gpus no matter the cost when they come out, get 11th gen or 5800x or 5900x (recommended)

 

if u can wait, wait for ddr5.

I was going to wait and do 12th gen Intel but Jesus I looked up ddr4 pricing at launch and it was bad.  Not to mention the situation we're in right now I'm sure prices will be higher. 

 

Intel will probably drop higher end skus at first, motherboards and ram will be thru the roof, you'll have early adopter issues also. 

 

If you can get a good deal on Intel 10th gen say at a microcenter or locally used I feel it's worth it. 

 

I'll be by a microcenter in 2 days, if you live in the US and want a CPU message me, I can grab you one and ship it to you at cost.

I can get the 10700k for 320 vs 5800x 440 so i think it would then be better?

There is no need to spend much on a motherboard. The vrm requirements are the same for 10400f without power limits and 5900x stock. Intel really is that bad now.

Ya, stock. But what about overclocking, and especially RAM overclocking, and the infinite fabric stuff?

 

i mean it looks like 150 is minimum for a half decent 5000 board, 200+ more like it… thats expensive, my b350 board cost 60…

Man a few months back Microcenter had those 10700KFs for like $239, and 10600KFs for $169....those were great deals. Now, not so much unfortunately.
