Would a 2080Ti be overkill for a 1080p 144hz setup?

I'm currently saving up about ~$1500 (US) to be able to build myself my first gaming PC in a year or two and although I know that by that time there will be new GPUs and CPUs and other parts out that will drastically change the landscape, I just wanted to get an idea of how strong I need my PC to be to be able to have a consistent 1080p 144hz, or maybe even switch up to 1440p or 4k depending on how strong my GPU and CPU can be in my budget. Would a 2080Ti be enough for 1080p 144hz? What about 1440p 144hz? Any suggestions for a GPU in a $1500 budget? AMD or nVidia, preferably nVidia since I'm more familiar with them, and I like the idea of things like ray tracing and DLSS, but I'm open to suggestions. Thank you!

It would be fine for that, you'd be able to play basically everything at max but it would pretty much be equal to getting an rtx 3060 ti (which I would recommend over the 2080).

Thought the 3060Ti was more like a 1080Ti?  2080Ti would be a 3070 equiv?

 

2080TI is overkill for 1080p 144Hz though, looking at the pricing.  Look at 2080's or 1080Ti's.

One thing I’ve heard mentioned a lot is having too powerful of a GPU is that if you’re running too low of a resolution it won’t be ideal as the GPU will render too many frames for your CPU to process and it could become bottlenecked resulting in stutters in gameplay. I could be wrong.. probably am wrong.

You haven’t mentioned what games you play. For esports games such as CSGO, then a 2080 Ti is plenty good enough for 1080p 144Hz. However if you play the latest AAA games then it is definitely not overkill.

Well if we're talking current GPU's, a 3060Ti or 3070 would be excellent at high resfresh rate 1080p for quite some years to come. The 3060Ti is on average only 10% or so slower than the 3070 and the 2080Ti sits somewhere inbetween

I've got a 3070 with a 1080p144 monitor. It's very good for 1080p, but there's a reason I've been looking into 1440p monitors - it's got a lot more potential that's not currently being used.

 

That being said.

 

I wouldn't exactly hesitate to recommend a 2080 Ti for 1080p144, since it has a good deal of staying power, as long as you can get it for a reasonable price. Maybe a 3060 Ti would provide better value, but I like my 3070 and I think it's well worth it, since it pretty much trades blows with the 2080 Ti.

The 2080 Ti trades blows with the 3070 in most benchmarks I've seen.
