setting up shortcuts on pixel phones

So I'm looking into if I can set up key shortcuts (multi presses of outside buttons) on my pixel phone, up to and including a factory reset. Is this even possible and if so, is it possible with the phone locked?

I believe it's possible if you root it, but not stock. On my old Nexus 5x, I had a couple shortcuts like that, but if it wasn't rooted, they wouldn't work.
