Will I be able to use a Ryzen5 3600 on asrock a320m-hdv motherboard?

Jacobtalks

So I bought a pc on Facebook market place for 40 bucks, it has a and a6 9500 apu, Also for some reason in hell it has 32gb of ddr4 ram. The mother board it has is a asrock a320m-hdv mb and I wanted to know is if the Ryzen 5 3600 would be compatible with my motherboard because I recently picked up a gtx 960 for 20 bucks

Provided you have the right BIOS, yes. You can update the BIOS - if needed - with the A6

Yes, you can use a Ryzen 3600 with that board, provided you're running a BIOS revision that supports Ryzen 3000.

Looking at Asrock's website, it looks like the earliest BIOS version that'll support a 3600 is 5.90, here:

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/A320M-HDV/index.asp#BIOS

If you're already running 5.90 or a newer BIOS version, then you can just throw a 3600 right in. Otherwise, you will need to update it first.

That motherboard and RAM is worth way more than $40. Even if the RAM is just 2133. And if that 960 actually works...

My point is, you got a steal of a deal. Whoever sold you that clearly had no idea what they had, or they sold you an expensive paperweight.

Then again, even if the motherboard, GPU and other components don't work, the RAM alone would go for more than all those parts used on eBay. Hopefully at least those sticks work.

Yeah, I'm sensing this is a too good to be true type of thing.  32GB of DDR4 isn't so old that people would just be okay dumping it for pennies.

That's great news. If the GPU works, once you throw in the 3600, you'll have a solid system for less than $300, which is just crazy in terms of value. Even ignoring the graphics card market right now, that system should cost close to $650.

Do you know whether the power supply is any good? That would be the last potential hurdle, I would think.

I’m thinking of upgrading the power supply because it’s like a weak 230 w or something around that

That's too low for a 3600 paired with a GTX 960. I'd imagine that it wouldn't even have a PCIe 6 pin to power the 960. The two parts combined draw around 200W at full load without overclocking.

If you want room to upgrade the 960 to an RTX 3060, or the rumored RX 6600, you should get a 500W power supply. Otherwise, a 400W should be plenty for what you have now.

Since your motherboard uses the ATX 24 pin and CPU 4 pin, you just need a PSU that is part of the ATX 24 pin standard. All of those will have at least a 4 pin for the CPU. And for the graphics card, you just need at least one 6 pin PCIe power out, which basically all power supplies 400W+ will have.

To be able to upgrade to an RTX 3060, you'd need it to have two PCIe 6 pins, because that graphics card takes two. Other popular cards like the RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 Super take PCIe 6+2 pin (sometimes called PCIe 8 pin, but the last two can unclip to let it be used as a standard PCIe 6 pin, so it's really 6+2). So it depends on what card you want to upgrade to what sort of output you need.

As for which power supplies are good, I feel obliged to link you this:

In your case, I'd aim for C tier or better.

In terms of compatibility, yes. It has the necessary connections for your motherboard and graphics card. It also has two 6+2 PCIe connections, so you could upgrade to a more powerful graphics card later on.

Its 500W version is D tier on the PSU Tier List, and the 600W version hasn't been tested, if you care about that. If you're on a tight budget, it is what it is. My current computer is a pre-built that came with a D tier PSU, and so far it's been fine, but I can't make any guarantees. I'm not a power supply expert, which is why I refer people to the Tier List. If it was E tier, I'd say it's not worth it even for free.

For $80, there's the Lian Li 215 X is reasonably priced with decent airflow and 2 large RGB fans at the front, but it doesn't look like your case has any RGB headers, so I don't think you'd be able to control those fans: https://www.newegg.com/p/2AM-000Z-00069

For $68, Newegg has a Cullinan MX open box deal - that case also has okay airflow, is from a recognizable brand, and the fans are remote controlled: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16811147275R

And at $48, in the "cheapest RGB case fan case I could find that might have okay airflow" category, we have this thing that I've never heard of before: https://www.newegg.com/p/2AM-02C8-00007

Considering that RGB case fans from random brands cost around $35-40 for a pack of 3-5, the last case is decent in terms of value from that perspective - you wouldn't be able to buy a cheaper case and then put in fans.
