Windows 11 Readiness Check (WhyNotWin11)

Apparently @rcmaehlhas https://www.whynotwin11.org/ but that's got no valid SSL certificate at the moment.

Hm, I found this site < mod removed > and the certificate (Let's Encrypt) there seams to be okay.

But no imprint on that site, no infos about the site owner. It's a bit weird.

Awesome work on this program, way more informative than the mess Microsoft released

Oof, that's terrible, and it's easy to mistake it for being legit because of its generally appealing layout, but the file was instantly flagged by Windows Security as severe, I've tried it out on Github first and that ran through just fine, even though I didn't need it as I'm already on Windows 11

Though thankfully the Github link is what appears first on Google

My "is it finally incompatible" test box is running just fine on 11. This rp5700 has 100% drive support all the way from XP to 11.

LOL!!  My CPU supports Win 11 but my ASUS Z-390 MoBo did not come with a TPM.  It's an add on purchase and a preliminary search of the usual PC parts vendors shows that there are none in stock.  I guess I'll have to muddle along with Win 10 for a while longer.  The MSFT document talks about implementation of TPM at the CPU level.  Does this involve a microcode update?  I have an i7 9700k processor.

Workstation PC Specs: CPU - i7 8700K; MoBo - ASUS TUF Z390; RAM - 32GB Crucial; GPU - Gigabyte RTX 1660 Super; PSU - SeaSonic Focus GX 650; Storage - 500GB Samsung EVO, 3x2TB WD HDD;  Case - Fractal Designs R6; OS - Win10

you only need to go into the BIOS and look for something called PTT, that's Intel's implementation of firmware level TPM emulation. enable it, and TPM 2.0 should be enabled.

Thanks!!!  I'm not in any hurry on this and certainly don't want to be a beta tester.

@TheB1gD4ddy

He means something like your system may contain a "GPT protective partition", so that's why it could not get recognized by the tool.

The link he shared is in german: https://www.seagate.com/de/de/support/kb/troubleshooting-gpt-protective-partition-issues-207837en/

Here the info from M$ about "protective MBR":

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/windows-and-gpt-faq#why-the-gpt-has-a-protective-mbr

This could mean, that your GPT partition doesn't have a protective mbr ... and that's why the whynotwin11 tool shows an error.

I think you'll have no problem at all with new operation systems, that could recocgnize GPT, but with older OS that couldn't.

A detection gpt does not work very well, it seems.
The system drive is gpt and so are the others, except the last one.

  1. https://www.seagate.com/de/de/support/kb/troubleshooting-gpt-protective-partition-issues-207837en/
  2. Find the volume number of the hard drive with the GPT protection partition.
    1. Right click on "My Computer".
    2. Choose Manage.
    3. Select Disk Management (listed under Storage).
    4. Find the drive labeled GPT and note the volume number (for example, disk 1).
  3. Open the command window.  At the command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter.  The Diskpart command prompt will open.
  4. At the Diskpart prompt, type list disk and press Enter.  A list of hard drives will appear in text format. You will be returned to the Diskpart prompt.
  5. At the Diskpart prompt, type select disk disknumber (for example, if the disk with the GPT protection partition is disk 2, type select disk 2 ) and press Enter.  A message will appear indicating that the disk has been selected. You will be returned to the Diskpart prompt.
  6. At the Diskpart prompt, type clean and press Enter. The partition and the hard disk signature are saved. You will be returned to the Diskpart prompt.
  7. At the Diskpart prompt, type exit and press Enter. Type exit again to close the command window. Now the internal or external hard drive can be reset, partitioned and formatted.
  8. Open Disk Management to initialize the hard disk:
    • To do this, use the Data Media Initialization and Conversion Wizard ...

I think it could also be, that you use Bitlocker ... or partition has different GUID. To change GUID you could use a partition tool like "MiniTool Partition Wizard".

Or it could depend on NVMe/SSD driver in your system.

Best regards

@rcmaehl

Now it looks good enough. Thanx for your fast bugfixing!

The version 2.3.0.3 comes with perfect translation! The "U" at "Unterstützt" now is correct. Great!

In dark mode your links aren't shown good enough. You may have to revert the colors.

Just wanted to say you have made a really great piece of software, and the speed at which you update it with fixes and or new features is fantastic. Thanks for this great little tool.

As the person above pointed out, the app in dark mode makes the links to things like you github, discord etc basically invisible or just four blank looking black squares.

But it works perfectly fine one my PC.

Tried the insider build of 11, a little to buggy for now for me. Thankfully I was able to rollback to Windows 10 no problem at all.

It seems, that only mounted partitions (C:, D:, ...) are counted.

Partitions without a letter will not be counted.

For my systems language "german" there are some translate mistakes with dieresis, maybe based on wrong codepage:

+ñ  => ä

++ => ü

+£ => Ü

Diersis should be fixed in 2.3.0.1+

Regarding the app, why not use standard fonts/labels/UI behavior? Current choices cause overrunning strings all over the place.

Text overrunning is being improved by allowing font sizes to be specified and allowing people to do rough translations instead of 1:1

Thanks for the great tool.

However I do not think it gives a correct result im my case. I have a sixth generation intel cpu, and whynotwin11 says it is fine for windows 11 use.

I remember that at least a gen 8 cpu is needed, and I can't find online that this has changed recently.
