Pressing back button in desktop browser after selecting "see their activity" on a user profile doesn't take you back correctly

Steps to reproduce/what were you doing before it happened?

Go to somebody else's profile. Press the "see their activity" button, then press the back button in your browser. Im on Chrome on Win 7 if that matters.

What happened?

The "all activity" page stays up and you aren't returned to their profile homepage.

What did you expect to happen?

To see their profile homepage, because that is the page I was on prior to the button press.

Link to a page where it happened, if applicable:

Any user profile with activity

Screenshots of the issue, if applicable:

Any other relevant details:

The URL changes to the proper one, as in the one previously, but you can't see their basic profile without pressing the "View profile" button where the "See their activity" button was on the previous page.

This bug resolves itself after using "View Profile" once. Consistently reproducible with the following steps:

  1. From the Forum Index, open Inspect Element
  2. Chrome (91.0.4472.77): Navigate to the Application tab
Firefox (89.0B15): Navigate to the Storage tab
  3. Clear Session Storage > https://linustechtips.com
  4. Access any user profile
  5. Click "See their activity"
  6. Attempt to use the back button

Interesting, I spotted this in the latest beta release, but didn't realise that it applies to the current release too. I reported it to IPS for the beta release, so it should be fixed in the next major update, some time later in the year.

So I know jack shit about website development, what does IPS mean in this context?

Yep, tested it on Chrome 90.0.4430.212 and I can repeat the bug. If I go to my profile, look at My Activity, hit the back button once, it'll put the link to my profile in the link bar, but the screen won't change. If I hit it again I end up wherever I was 2 pages ago.

They're the people who build this forum software.
