I mean, you definitely can't run every game maxed out and get stable 60FPS but if you're reasonable with the settings and keep it at high/medium you can still easily get over 100FPS in most games.

You can always max out textures but don't overdo it with AA.

Agreed. In most games, there's practically no perceptible difference in image-quality anyways with certain graphical settings, but there may still be quite a big difference in performance-hit. Hardware Unboxed has done several game-optimization guides and e.g. Red Dead Redemption 2 shows this quite well, where some of the settings make zero difference to the output, but do tank performance quite a bit.

If you have a 1080ti in 2021 you're probably in a better place than most.

As good as the 1080ti is, some games can bring it to its knees.

No Mans Sky for example. 1080p 150% scaling max settings will give you as low as 40 fps on some of the more flora dense planets. granted NMS isnt the most optimized of games, its still an example.

It depends on how anal you are with visual fidelity. Anti Aliasing for example. If you dont mind the smeary mess that is TXAA, FXAA, and TAA, u can use any of them with minimal performance loss. However if u use a visually good AA like MSAA, its going to quickly show the limits of the 1080ti. SSAO, volumetric effects, and other LOD options can also cripple performance if you max them out even at 1080p resolution let alone 1440p.

that said, in most games, if u stick to high or very High presets and avoid 'ultra', u should be good for 60 fps at 1440p.

IMO MSAA is a waste - it's a huge resource hog for minimal benefit. I never use it.

My personal solution is FXAA + global Image Sharpening/RIS in the driver. The FXAA is enough to smooth off rough edges, and the filter helps mitigate some of its blurriness. Both of these techs are almost free from a resource/performance standpoint.

Of course this combination works better at higher resolutions, but it still works at 1080p. I've done side by sides and at 1440p it's nearly imperceptible, especially in motion, between something absurd like 8x MSAA and FXAA + IS/RIS. At 1080p it's marginal difference in visuals.

you can override MSAA with MFAA by enabling it in NVCP for better performance at the same visual quality.

I think this is removed if you have 2000 and 3000 series cards.

Indeed, it does help...but not as many games use processed (super sampled) AA anymore. So MFAA doesnt work.

They tend to use the easier to implement, performance friendly, but worse quality, post process AA like FXAA and TAA. This is why i end up just disabling AA altogether and running DSR. Heavy performance impact but when these games wont implement any type of processed AA so u cant even force it on via NVCP or Inspector ...the only other option is DSR which looks a hell of a lot better than post process AA.

Mine are doing great.

Here is SOTTR on the highest setting at 1440p.

RDR 2 was the first game that I tested that the 1080 ti could not reach 60fps on ultra but with Hardware Unboxed settings it was most frames over 60 at 1440p.
