BOINC task shows as running, but is not actually running the task

Go to solution Solved by WhitetailAni,

Alright, I think I found the problem.

Apparently Radioactive@Home simply doesn't support this old of a CPU.

PrimeGrid does, though, and it's running now.

CPU time is ticking upwards and I've made 0.001% progress in 1.5 minutes.

Estimated time to finish is 31 hours though.

Wonder how long it'll take to hit 25,000 credits?

I will be enlisting a 2 GHz single-core G5 soon though.

Earlier today, I decided to set up BOINC on my Pentium III machine. It's got a Pentium III 500 MHz Slot 1, 2GB of PC133 RAM, and Windows 2000 SP4.

I picked a project, chose the LTT team, and it showed as running. So I left it until now.

Under the Tasks menu, it said this:
Project                              Application                             Name                                  CPU time            Progress         To completion       Report deadline                  Status

Radioactive@Home         Radioactivity Monitor 1.78      sample_12900356_0         00:00:00              0.000%           2.5 hours*             4/20/2021 4:07:21 PM        Running

9 hours later, it says this:

Project                              Application                             Name                                  CPU time            Progress         To completion       Report deadline                  Status

Radioactive@Home         Radioactivity Monitor 1.78      sample_12900356_0         00:00:01              0.000%           02:14:14             4/20/2021 4:07:21 PM        Running

It is set to "Run Always".

If I look under Task Manager, under Processes it lists boinc.exe as using 0:00:38 CPU time with 8672K of RAM used, and boincmgr.exe with 0:30:32 CPU time and 8072K of RAM used.

Does anyone know why it's not actually running?

If you would like any more info I am happy to provide.

*Did not say this exactly but was around 2.5 hours

Boy that brings back memories. I think I still have one of those in a PIX at work.

Can you include a screen-shot of the BOINC Manager Options screen please.  Likely you have it set to just fold when the System is idle and/or to not use the CPU 100% of the time. You’ll likely have to use <Ctrl>+PrintScr in Win2k then paste into Paint and save as jpg tho ...

I got it working. The task I had attached to just wasn't working with my CPU. PrimeGrid does though. I've got 0.021% done in 8 minutes now.

I have a new problem though - I can't select "Join this team" for the LTT team.

Picture attached (screenshots aren't working but I have a decent camera):

I'm using Firefox since IE fails at everything and I couldn't find a working version of Chrome.

Yeah, welcome to BOINC. If memory serves it’s always a little twitchy getting it setup at first as every project is slightly different.

I've run into a circle of problems...

I can only attach to three projects.

Radioactive@Home, RNA World, and PrimeGrid.

Radioactive@Home doesn't run the tasks.

PrimeGrid runs the tasks, but I can't join teams on their website (there is no "Join this team" button anywhere).

RNA World just straight up doesn't have any tasks.

Check if there's a join button here it's the team page for the LinusTechTips_Team. I don't have an account so if there is one I can't see it.

I looked, and nothing.

Even on my Ryzen machine, to rule out the age factor.

There's also no join button for other teams.

Strange. Reading the search page instructions:

To join a team, visit its team page and click Join this team.

There is suppose to be one.

Yep, I saw that.

Very confusing to me.

Anyway, after trying every. single. project, I've determined that I can only attach to RNA World, Radioactive@Home, and PrimeGrid.

Every other one fails with "The project is temporarily unavailable.   Please try again later."
All the projects that have HTTPS fail, and all but the three I mentioned with HTTP fail.

I have absolutely no idea what changed but it works now.

Decided to detach and reattach (and thus log out and log back in) and the join button appeared.

I am now attached to PrimeGrid and have joined the team LinusTechTips_Team.

BOINC estimates I'll finish in 31 hours.

But the time to completion is going up one second every second.

The time to completion is only an estimate and until you do finish some work it's not going to show you anything remotely accurate.

I’ve ended going through hell trying to get my accounts joined at projects.  Glad to know it’s not just me.

Given the project sites involvement in BOINC I wish it was kind of a UI standard that the steps to join a team were the same across the board.
