V-sync - Stuck at 58 FPS

smeek14

Specs: Ryzen 9 5900x, 16 gb ddr4, MSI tomahawk, 2080 ti. Windows 10 20H2 19042.804

Whenever I enable v-sync on my computer (60hz monitor), My FPS is stuck at 58. Sometimes it will go back up to 60 for a split second but it more or less stays at 58. I just noticed it today, I haven't gamed in about a week.

I can't disable it or I will get a large amount of screen tearing. Capping my FPS at 60 without v-sync does very little for said screen tearing. This is the first time I have experienced this issue and it has happened in every game I tried.

I tried enabling V-sync both in Nvidia control panel and in games (one at a time though), this made no difference

I tried enabling triple buffering, this did nothing

Tried the adaptive and fast options in Nvidia control panel v-sync options, did not work

Windows 10 is up to date

Updating then reinstalling drivers did nothing

Disabling full screen optimizations (tried in one game) did not work

Turned on hardware accelerated GPU setting, did not work

Turning off game mode didn't work either

I've tried everything I can think of. I'm at a loss lol.

Possibly related: I noticed that the default value for the Nvidia control panel FPS limiter is 58, setting this to 60+ made no difference

Thank you everyone in advance. Please let me know if you need more information.

Edit: also tried disabling Riva Tuner this didn't work

Tried rolling back Windows updates, nothing

Tried using old known good GPU driver, nothing

2fps more won't change anything to you. Unless you currently are having issues. It could be a bug in Nvidia's drivers, or designed to work this way. Either way, you are rendering more frames and this is more about being limited than not actually being able to render up to 60fps.

I tried both Rivatuner and the FPS counter in Geforce Experience and they both said the same. I also know that I am supposed to be getting more FPS than this as my CPU and GPU usage are both low, still doesn't hit 60 even when looking up at the sky. Also I'm not sure that it was designed to work this way. Every time I've turned on Vsync ever it has always kept me at a solid 60 FPS.

You said Nvidia control panel had limiter at 58fps by default. That kinda says its either a bug or feature. So ways to see if something changes would be to try with older and newer drivers.

Right, I tried setting it 60+ and it still won't go above 58 with v-sync on. I tried a driver from October 2020 and no difference.

Some games have damage and even game AI tied to framerate (typically Capcom games but also Demons Souls for example), so it does make a difference sometimes.

So basically if you're constantly only reaching 58fps you're doing about 17 percent less damage (with pierce ammo in this example)

Also I think if the refresh rate of the monitor is for example 60hz a 58fps lock will be noticeable as it just won't feel smooth ever, at least without vsync.

Hmm, this sounds weird,  btw I checked in my nv settings the default is also 58fps, it doesn't really make sense,  I know for sure that vsync limits my fps to 60-61 (*thinking emoji*) on a 60hz screen and generally feels smooth...

Are you sure you can actually reach 60fps in those games?  I mean it'd be a weird coincidence but a possible explanation nonetheless.

Also can you check what refresh rate windows actually reports for your monitor?

Yes, without Vsync I get well over 60 fps. Windows 10 reports that I get 59.997hz. My other monitor which is a 4k tv says exactly 60 hertz. I ran the game on said tv and got the exact same issue. Edit: Can't see a single settings on my PC no set to 60hz.

Ancient games at this point. Back in the day speed of the game was tied to CPU clockspeed too. Doesn't mean that speed of CPU changing 200MHz today would have major effect in games.

I can very easily notice 58 fps instead of 60. Also I spent a lot on my machine and want to get what I paid for lol

Limiting it to 60fps to begin with because of tearing is not how I would use something I have paid money for.

As for noticing it, I don't notice such small changes. over 5fps and closer to 10fps is something I will note.

Alright, well I'm just looking for a solution. It worked so good before.

Well they aren't really ancient ,Monster Hunter World isn't really old and was Capcoms biggest game so far iirc, and RE  engine, which seems to have this 'quirk' as well is actually current gen engine, a better word would be archaic maybe.  Btw I don't see this as negative,  most of my favorite games seem to have this or similar quirks ,fighting games as well, you're at a serious disadvantage with anything but 60fps at those typically.

I see... that shouldn't be an issue then, Windows reports 59hz (or 119hz, etc) for my monitor *falsely* as well but I still get locked 60fps, etc with or without vsync.  I just thought maybe it showed something totally out of order...

Only other thing I can think of is cables then, did you try some different ones?

Otherwise this seems like a really odd bug.  🤔

No but I tried using my TV instead which is HDMI instead of display port. Same error. Yea... my next step might be to reinstall Windows.

  • 8 months later...

i found out how to fix this my monitor was also stuck at 58hz. what you need to do is go to nvidia control panel, go to manage 3d settings then scroll down to where it says 58 fps on global settings. than click restore on the bottom and click apply and ur good.
