Did NVidia just kill the 3060 for you?

Sarra

So, this is an odd time. I literally just started Nice Hash mining on my server machine's GPU when I'm not using it. It's a GTX 980. I have a Vega 64 in my gaming PC, but that will eventually be replaced with a 6800XT.

Now, I was not seriously considering a 3060. I wasn't even thinking about upgrading that GPU. Until I started running mining. Now, I'm thinking about something inexpensive, but better than the 980. Heck, I could get a new card, and keep the 980 as my display card, and just mine on the other card. And now the 3060 isn't even an option for that.

So, did anyone just realize that NVidia's new cards are absolutely not for them? I think I already knew I was never going to get a 30 series card when they did their BS with Hardware Unboxed, but dang, now they're really on my craplist.

I guess I'll be grabbing a 6700XT or whatever, and dropping that in my old server machine. Maybe time to sell the 980.

The 6000 series doesn't mine well either (60 MH/s for 6800 XT), if you want good mining get a 3060 Ti I'd say.

Highly unlikely it'll kill it for many people, especially since this isn't a mining forum and most people despise the practice.

I wouldn't get an AMD GPU for a couple more generations, until they've proven they can consistently make solid drivers.

It is most certainly going to take more than couple of generations.

Hi, 3060ti owner here

The 3060ti with a hefty memory overclock has the same hash-rate as a 6800XT (reportedly), I get 60MH/s with mine on DaggerHashimoto

I would definitely say if you can go cheaper, go cheaper. 3060ti just an overall good time. If you want the bulk, you could try the 6800XT tho and still get the same mining performance, just know your ROI is increased by a fair margin

Well, I certainly am not getting a new NVidia card. So, what's left? Get one of the Intel 'gaming' GPU's? There's another bun that needs a few more years in the oven...

You can definitely go with the 6800XT, it's not a bad card, sure it's not the best hash-rate for the price but it's still a really good hash-rate

Going amd next time most likely, I don't even mine, but it's a peice if hardware why put up invisible walls? I don't care if Nvidia cards are faster they are acting like apple and I don't like that.

I figure 3 generations of solid drivers is enough for me. So 6ish years, of which they're already around year into.

Though, honestly the add on features of the Nvidia cards alone sort of make them a more worthwhile investment.

The concern is that AMD drivers have been very very iffy for a while. Recently helped a friend of mine build a computer, I recommended he get an RX 580 for his budget. Driver crashes every hour or so, sometimes accompanied by a bluescreen. Needless to say I felt bad about recommending that card to him. Been having the same issues on an RX 460 and even a 7950.

So, here's the thing: I don't actually care about hashrate. I just want to be able to utilize some of the unused cycles that are available on my card, for a possible return. If I'm spending $1,000 on a GPU, then if I can make some of that back, while also enjoying the card as a gaming GPU, then why not?

What really irritated me was the fact that NVidia has removed that as an option on the 3060, and apparently, the 3080TI. I've literally only ever owned and used three AMD GPU's, one being one of the old monster dual GPU one PCB cards (that was semi-broken and didn't work very well), an ancient ATI mobile chip on a PCIE AIB, and the Vega 64 I've got now. And yes, NVidia drivers are miles and miles ahead of AMD's, but I hate the culture they have. If NVidia was a political party, I would never vote for them. At least AMD is trying, whereas NVidia feels like it's intentionally doing the opposite.

So, yeah, I'm getting a 6800XT. I'm getting it to game on, but if I'm going to invest the money in water cooling it, then I may as well mine on it too.

This is EXACTLY the right mindset and what pissed me off about the limiter. As was said on the WAN show, this hurts gamers more than it benefits them, in literally every single way

Hasn't Nvidia already been putting artificial locks on gaming cards for professional applications for a while now, so people don't get 1080ti's Instead of quadros?

You can still get a 3060 and mine.
you are doing it with a horrid 980. Basically wasting power. Like using a 10603gb. So is it not the same in the end?

No. I already have the 980, and I have had it for 6 years. I would still be using it, it runs ridiculously cool (70c maximum, quiet fans, even with an OC), and I don't pay for my electricity. It has been sitting in my server collecting dust for the past 3 months, I've maybe done a rendering project on it, so, I would like to get something from it.

If I could flip it and get a 1080TI or better, I would. For now, it's just gonna plod along doing this, until I need to render something on that machine, which is basically never anymore.

I have no intention of 'getting rich overnight' off a 980. But I would like it to do more than just sit and idle. I think I might also try mining on my Vega 64, but I'll have to be careful, since that card runs much, much hotter.
