Did I fuck up on my PSU purchase? (CX 650m)

Go to solution Solved by Fasauceome,

You made the right choice. The CXM line is a reliable budget unit, it can handle something like a 6800XT. On the Nvidia side, something like a 3080 could present issues but the current gen AMD cards have much more tame power spikes.

And you pointed out yourself, a little over 300 watts for the GPU and under 100 watts for the CPU, leaves you over 200 watts for everything else.

Hey guys, I almost completed my build, Im just waiting for the motherboard and PSU to get shipped. My build is a 5600x, rx 6800 XT, 16gb ddr4 cl16 3600mhz.

In my country the PSU prices are pretty steep and the purchasing options are limited. For the PSU I bought a Corsair CX650m for $120, There was also the cooler master MWE650 bronze for $80 but that one didnt feel reliable enough based on reviews, anyway the corsair met pretty much the maximum allowance in my budget (grey model, not green one). First of all I know the quality of the parts in this psu are not top notch, but in comparison the RM650x is $150, which was too high for me. This psu still is in tier B of the LTT tier list, but since im on a high end system...

First off, theoretically is wattage under load going to suffice on this psu for my build? When I checked the RX 6800XT review (the XFX one) the maximum power draw was around 320W overclocked, and for the 5600x I believe it is 76W. With that said, I think there is enough headroom for components and power spikes during gaming?

Other than that, I cannot cancel the order now, its already under way, but I can maybe send it back after it has been recieved and refund it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that is it really worth it to go through all this trouble, pay $30 extra for the rm650x for peace of mind?

I would say you did. 650W really isnt enough for a 6800XT, not to mention the CXM has alot of problems and is just a low quality unit overall

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Powersupply should be fine. I'm running a 6800 XT and 5800x on a Corsair SF600 with no issues.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Thank you! that's the reassurance I needed. I will be using this PSU for my build.

Eh, I would say the RMx would definitely have been a much better and more appropriate choice. The CXM is double forward on the primary, so you should expect to get coil whine. The RMx is much quieter, and performs better.

Ah, yes, the $600 MSRP 6800 XT and the $300 MSRP 5600X are no problem. But $150 for the RM650x is too expensive. Suuuuure.

Why would that be relevant to OP at all....? The SF and CXM are completely different.

:)

So you blew your wad on the graphics card, but couldn't be bothered to spend an extra $30 on the PSU?

Do you drive a Corvette with a set of Barum tires?

The CX650M will work, but because it's double forward, it's going to be load as f-k when you game and benchmark.
