Why do people want better graphics cards?

Trail Mixorz

I mean if you have an 8800gt I can see why, but I have a 670 and I have zero desire for a better card. I was getting around 60fps in 64 player BF4 on Zavod and had little to no stutter at all. I can see if you want to take advantage of higher resolutions or refresh rates, but on a 60Hz 1080p display, I don't see the point of a higher end card. Your thoughts?

To run better games at higher settings at higher framerates and better resolutions? I thought it would be fairly self explanatory why people want better things...

Because:

  • you want the latest and greatest
  • you have money to spare

Actually I'm fine with just current top-end cards, but it's always nice to get them at a better price.  So when they release new, more powerful graphics cards, the lower tier ones are equal in power to previous top tier cards but they take on the lower price point :D plus they are usually more efficient as a bonus.

Because even when you can max out the game at 60fps + some people still want to have the best of the best just so they can say they have it lol.

Yeah this is what I was thinking.

Yeah I know I bought my 670 for 200 new off amazon a few months ago. Best $200 I've ever spent

Headroom; higher resolution; ultra settings etc.

Would you rather your graphics card to only be able to hold 60fps? What happens when there's an explosion/ lots happening on the screen? Your framerate tanks.

These types of questions again. Great.

For me, it's about both GPU mining altcoins and prepping for 4K. I'll be getting another 290X before I get a 4K monitor (that should give them plenty of time to go down in price).

Plus I get 80-140 FPS in BF4 with 40-48 players on most maps at absolute max settings at 1080p.

You never mentioned your settings. I doubt that's at maximum (literally everything at the most graphically intensive setting within the normal UI settings).

Headroom

This basically.

Well, I guess the goal is future proof so I guess that's why, only reason why I'll get a 770 is I want to game on 4K

Moar Pixels, BF4, Crysis 3, and moded Skyrim at 1440p @ 60fps just looks so damn good plus it's more "future proof".

Eh, there are just so many different scenarios that people find themselves in. They might be running higher resolutions, higher refresh rate monitors, or multiple monitors. Even if you're just a single 1080p 60 Hz, even the current list of most demanding games will have dips below 60 fps, and people might want to mitigate it as much as possible. Then there's people who buy top level cards to put off having to buy a replacement for as long as possible. Soooo many different possible reasons.

Yes, you'll have people who do it for the e-peen, but I imagine they're a minority.

I don't see how a 670 can do Ultra 1080p at 60 FPS consistently in all games

My GTX 580 (which is a little bit slower than the 670) cant do it. Some games it really chokes on these days compared to some of the better/newer cards out there. If new games start coming out the card will fall further and further behind, and if you ever upgrade to a higher resolution you will just lack the power

Because they want access to the newest features.  While a 670 can run most games on ultra you aren't getting all the new benefits the come with new cards.  Also a 670 isn't going to play new games on ultra for much longer, and I doubt it will be able to handle multiple (or even one) 4k display.

tl;dr

  • Because they're faster and just better in general
  • Future proofed

I want to quote just about everyone in this conversation

I completely agree that it's stupid. but I got my 680 for the price of a 760 so couldn't pass up the price to performance ratio as well as upgrade my little bro at the same time (which I was thinking of doing without touching my rig anyway) So I basically just scored.

lol. all the latest cards are on kepler aside from t he 750 Ti which is a load slower than the 670, the 670 is basically a 760 mate.

also there's no such thing as future proofing, if there were the 580,680,780 etc. would have been the best investments overall while the best seller cards are the X60 range. the best way to future proof is to save the money till whatever you saved for actually comes out and you buy something OPTIMIZED for it.

well what if u buy a 780ti for now 1080p gaming but soon (whatever that time may be) you are giong to go 1440p display? maybe u run the 780ti at 1080p for 6 months until you save up for that 1440p monitor
