What GPU should I get for ethereum mining?

BoxTurtle

So I am planning to mine ethereum soon and I am trying to figure out which graphics card I am going to get. I am willing to spend up to around $300 but I would prefer to spend less. I am just going to start with one graphics card just to try out mining and see how it goes. What card should I get?

Yeah good luck finding a graphics card for that price, let alone to one for mining.

I plan to find one on ebay when prices lower. I do not have the money yet too. Edit: Ignore the price. I am just going to take it out.

If the prices have lowered, it'll no longer be worth buying something for mining. It's largely what's driving those high prices. When you see affordable cards, it'll probably be miners offloading stuff that's no longer cost effective.

You should keep the price in because that's what really determines what you'll get. Best card to get is a 3090, but you are not willing or able to spend (over) $2000 on a card.

Do you think I could use a 1060 or 1070 if I found one at a reasonable price? I know the situation right now first hand. I have been trying to get my cpu for my computer for three months.

but what makes you think its going to be profitable mining with one card which your budget is below 500$. I'm genuinely curious. i tested my 3080 for an estimated number and it doesn't sound right with the numbers i got. (450$ a month) so I'd like to know what's your thinking

Check https://whattomine.com to see if it'll be profitable for you after power costs. Also keep in mind you'll first mine back the purchase cost before you start making profit.

For 1060 only consider the 6 GB version, not the 3 GB.

you could, but do bare in mind the hash per watt of those gpu isnt that great

and 1060 3gb is useless for ETH, since it needs 4.5GB as of writing

the ship has sailed for mining, you had to get in during december, or you probably just end up paying a whole lot for not much

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Depends on power costs and power consumption as well as hash rate. All things you'd have to research.

Doesn’t really make sense to buy a single card to mine. Not one in that price range. That could get you a 1060 but it has to be a 6gb model. Or even a 1070 if you can get one for that price.
I’d suggest you actually buy the coin and not waste the time mining.

Why should I buy it instead of mining it. Is it because ethereum “2.0” is coming out or what?

Because you are wanting to buy a low end card that would pay itself off in 5 months assuming you do it 24/7.
So after that you’ll actually make profit. As opposed to buying the coin.
you can make money as fast as you can trade and convert within hours normally to actually seeing money in the bank.

And yes even without the changes coming I’d advise against it. No real point to go out of your way to mine with a single card in a whole system.

If I were you just wait until prices normalise. You will find it very hard to profit from your overpriced purchase

whattomine is trash and is insanely inaccurate. It says my 7 cards should be mining at 120mh/s when in fact i mine at 211mh/s

for $300 yeah probably best advice to just buy a little and hold. although i'd say buy and hold BTC

I have some 570's and a 5700xt if i knew prices were going to skyrocket i'd of bought all 5700xt's because i got mine for $350 and was going to save up and buy more. Now they are sold for about $700 so i'm rolling with what i got.

If you do get any card make sure it has at least 8gb of vram because less than that and you're limiting the coins you can mine and those ones are all shitcoins that aren't worth anything.

If you hover over the card name it'll show assumed settings. I know we differ in opinion about this, but every time I tried for me whattomine has always been accurate whereas e.g. coinwarz couldn't be further from the truth. If I changed settings and my hashrate changed because of that, then its two fields to update and done.

Or just put that money in the actual market instead of betting on monopoly money.
