Got a old/free PC, and it needs a new GPU

Makol

Hi all,

I recently picked up an older (2008) Dell Vostros 410 from a family friend which is still functional but is in need of a new graphics card. Here are the specs:

Intel Q6600 @ stock

8GB DDR2 1066MHz

Corsair CX430 430 Watt power supply

I already replaced the old 350 Watt Dell power supply since I had a spare that happened to fit in the case nicely.

Since this PC was free I don't want too invest a whole lot of money into it since it won't be doing a whole lot of high-end gaming. All it would need to do is to be able to play some of these games (http://puu.sh/7HBX9.jpg / http://puu.sh/7HBZx.jpg including Star Craft 2 and Diablo 3) at a decent framerate since this is just going to be a guest PC that rarely plays games as you can tell by the Steam hours on record  :P

The monitor/TV that is going to be used with this computer has a max resolution of 1920x1080 which my G53SW is able to handle decently with most of the game listed, on lower settings of course.

Go with a 750Ti. I am saving up for one and I have the same system specs, just custom, not Dell.

holy butt cheeks those were some fast replies

I'll look into the GTX 750 and see who has the best deal on it.

Do you think the Dell 350 Watt would be able to handle a GTX 750? It would be easier on my wallet if I could sell the CX430 to a friend who may be able to put it to good use.

If it has a PCIe connector, yes. But it's Dell, big brands use cheap PSUs.

That is true.

By using the Dell PSU I could be unintentionally making an IED. But yeah, it does have a 6-pin connector. The GPU was that was in the PC before was a 9800GT that died many moons ago.

I got a similar pc with a Q6600 from my grandpa who used it for photoshop and since i didnt replace the 350w psu i put in a gt 640 and it was a tank still. the 750 or 750 ti are your best bet. The single fan EVGA models dont require a power supply connector anyways and would be your best bet.

Here's all I could find on the Dell power supply, 350-Watt ATX power supply (100-127V, 200-240V), I'd get more accurate info but I'm not able to at the moment.

It's fine. You can run a 750 Ti off of an oem 300w if not 250w.

Okay sweet. Guess I'll get this GTX 750 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IDG3NDY/?tag=linustechtips) and sell my CX430 to reduce my wallet's impending doom.

But if my house blows up you're buying me a nice box to live in.

I would say the Ti. Might as well at that price range. I think the non-Ti is a step below a technical 'gaming' card, and the Ti is Nvidia's new bottom-line real gaming card.

Should be fine. At worst, you'll be out a cheap PSU.

I'd get the GTX 750 Ti but the extra $40 is really something I can't do at the moment since I left my job to finish school. The money I'm using to upgrade this Dell I managed to get my selling off some things I don't use anymore, and by selling the CX430 I'm barely able to get the GTX 750 non-Ti anyway.

If I wasn't going to sell the CX430 I was looking at a GTX 550 Ti at Microcenter that is going for $75, but I think the GTX 750 would be a better investment

That card sucks. You might as well get a 650Ti for that price on Ebay. Plus, Radeon cards aren't known to be cool and power efficient.

Hey

I thought that the 750ti would fit this build well.

It is small and does not consume a lot of power.

Also it has 2gb of GDDR5 for your 1080P display.

Good luck
