Is "native software" for Chromebooks a thing?

On ChromeOS I always think of there being 3 ways to use software:

  • Webapps, if the software you want can run in a browser and you're happy with some limitations on working offline
  • Linux programs, if you want proper desktop-oriented software and can put up with some issues getting it to work perfectly
  • Apps from the Play Store, if you want something which generally works OK out of the box and don't mind interacting with a mobile style interface in a desktop-type environment

 

Is there any such thing, though, as software which is "native" to ChromeOS? What would be the ChromeOS equivalent to downloading an EXE installer?

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Basically this, ChromeOS is just a barebones Linux system with Chrome on top of it. You don't typically use installers on Linux systems.

The equivalent of an EXE would be a standalone webapp. You would get an icon in your start menu or dashboard that you can click and will launch a window that's essentially chrome but it will just be the program or game and not have all the other functionality. Otherwise like others have stated it's just a linux distro but most chromebooks are running ARM CPUs

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Not really, A Native Application to ChromeOS would be a Native Application to Chrome. These are essentially just webapps, whether offline or online.

With the rapid development in web technologies over recent years, webapps can come fairly close to Native Desktop counterparts. Google is pretty much using this to their advantage to turn Chrome into a OS. Anything else that would run on top of ChromeOS would run in a container of sorts.

You can still just take a static binary and run it on its own without apt, there's no difference as to how "native" it is. The only difference is that the package manager manages your programs so you don't need to worry about keepint track of dependencies and updates.

Anything running on ChromeOS is sandboxed in some sort of a container. Android apps, Linux apps and so on. Even the USB access is controlled.

 

Android apps were added at some point but no real incentive for app devs to support tablet/laptop screen sizes. Then native Linux apps yet if you want some system/hardware access it will be a problem. And they killed Chrome apps for the most part.

Nope As far as I know, Chrome OS is a heavily modified Gentoo.

 

The purpose of the os is to run web apps, so no, no native programs.

 

However, if someone gets access to the lower level Linux underpinnings, they !ay be able to write bash/zsh scripts.
