Will one of those acoustic shields block sound from leaving too?

Go to solution Solved by Psittac,

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of what @Blue4130 said, they are for damping reverb and echo.  I know little about acoustics but hear it mentioned in my normal searching and that was my understanding.

I'm sure it will help but it won't be a solution.

One cost effective route is moving blankets, if you hang those up it might deaden some of the sound.

Im trying to talk without waking up my mom in the next room, will one of those acoustic shields help kill sound?

Not enough info.  What “accoustic shield” are you talking about?  im sort of imagining some sheet of something which is supposed to block sound.  I doubt it does it very well.

a basic description of sound reduction.

Spoiler

There is sound barrier stuff, and sound absorbing stuff.  Sound is air vibration.  You can stop the air from moving or you can absorb the vibration.

Generally good absorbing systems are heavy.  They can be cheap, but are often heavy. You generally want something that just kind of sits there.  Soft rubber is pretty good, as is something that is fluffy and easy to move and has a lot of state changes.  Particle board for example is a not too bad sound absorber because it’s made of sawdust and glue.  Lots of little air pockets with wood bits and glue bits.  Another is this stuff called “blue fill” which is made of recycled blue jeans. Even with these though a sound barrier is still needed.

Barrier stuff is about air tightness.  If you can keep air from moving and vibration from traveling you can make it go.  Saran Wrap is air tight but a lousy sound barrier because it transfers vibration.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

The monoprice one is an absorber.  It will likely help.  I don’t know if it will help enough. Looked to be a bunch of foam with sound refracting spikes.  The spike thing can work very well but they generally have to be tuned. Mere “spikiness” often doesn’t actually do much.

amazon one is also an absorber.  Note that there is a microphone stand on each of them.   They may very well be set to either deal only with a point on the end of that stand. To get any good out of these one would probably have to stick your head at that point to talk and I’m still not sure it would do enough good.

No, they will do nothing. If you cannot fix the problem by talking quietly, there is not much you can do.

Even a wood panel or some dry wall will block sound quite effectively. Most of the time sound will travel through gaps and holes. A new gasket on a door might be all you need. Put on a audio book on a speaker in your room and try to localize where the sound is bleeding into your mother's room.

I'll try that too, thank you!
