Nothing is free. 

Google had this planned for a long time. Get people used to it and dependent on it, then start charging. 

Anything "free" from a multi billion dollar company costs you in one way or another.

Only reason why something is "free" in the first place is usually because the user is the product.

Or to make them the product. I mean who can compete with "free"? There are not competitors like this left due to it being free and now that it's payed again there is finally room for competition but the user base is already on google so any competition will have to fight against that monolith making it extremely hard to survive.

Exactly.  Everything you do on a "free" service is monetized one way or another.  Ever wonder how Google trained AI to recognize objects and faces?  It used pictures people willing gave up for "free" storage.  

A lot of businesses use Google docs because it's free. Guess what, Google is mining all that info.  

Amazon offering web services?  Guess what, they are mining the info on their platform for ideas.  

I've known several small businesses that used Amazon to sell products. Amazon saw how well the businesses were doing and ended up making identical products under the Amazon Basics line and essentially killing off the business.

This, heck with Docker you don't even need a particularly powerful server for basic web services.

Between dockers and snaps behind an nginx reverse proxy I've got 2 nextcloud instances (one personal and one for a work project), a gitea server for my code, a jitsi and a rocketchat for my remote work, a wiki, a syncthing container so I've got an always on instance when my other machines are off and have yet to add a wordpress and finally set up some presence again.

 

All running on a cool old 4th gen HP business SFF I got for free (4570T/256GB SSD/8GB) that's tucked under my router, all services are fast, CPU's doing nothing, and only 3GB RAM used.

Yep, now that i have gig service at home i can set up owncloud or next cloud for the family. 

Have a xeon e5-2670 V2 doing nothing. Need to put it to use as a cloud server, image host, chat server, Plex server, email server.

you got sources to back up those claims? Besides the Amazon basics. Amazon sees what's popular, then they make those products. Something something supply and demand.

Collabora Office is amazing, especially if you run a full server instance yourself. Its basically Libre Office in its entirety but running in a browser.

 

Another AMAZING app I discovered recently is code-server. Its MS Code but running in a browser, it means you have access to all your files from any PC (assuming you forward the correct ports) and when you need to build something it builds on the server rather than your PC so you can do other things without having to worry about make taking longer than it should.

like I said all the features and stuff to play around with plus you can do it all by yourself for free ( well you need some hardware to run it but when you buy hardware and run it for some time it gets cheaper than an external provider like Google )

I've tried the built-in server but for some reason can't seem to get it to do anything even if it says it's OK, might need to check a separate one...

Works a treat though the internal server also works for me too. I had an issue with the language defaulting to US, once I switched to my own CODE instance that went away.

OK, managed to get the standalone instance working after fighting a lot with the reverse proxy and CODE config but not sure how (lots of people with the same issue, no clear solution...), it's pretty convenient
