Curved or Flat Monitor?

NardsIsh

Hi my son wants to start PC gaming. He wants a 32-34" monitor.

I know some find it sacrilege, but as he is a console gamer he will be connecting his Xbox controller to the PC, because he moves around so much when gamming.

With all that in mind, would you recommend a flat or curved monitor?

I am in the process of doing a PC build for him with CPU Ryzen 9 5950x and GPU RX 6800 XT and I'm wanting IPS panel.

So if anyone has recommendations for a specific monitor that would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your help.

99% of your curved montinors are going to be VA. both are nice for gaming depending on the titles. If hes closer to the to monitor a curved monitor shouldn't be a problem but farther away a flat panel should be a better pick. If he is going to be watching videos at any distance outside of the preferred sitting range of a curved monitor it may look weird.   There is that wow factor that you may consider when opening the box, but that will depend on his knowledge of monitors and age(sometime kids just care and just want what looks cool. lol).

My personal pick would be a flat panel. It will check all the boxes. plus when friends are over or playing together it will be more comfortable for everyone.

Hi many thanks for your reply. He's 14 and has only used TV for console gaming (hence why he wants a larger screen).  I have found most of the choices are VA, but haven't read many reviews that are good about VA, again hence the IPS option is what I thought would be best.  He sits and stands whilst gaming and can be pretty much on top of it at some points, however I was hoping with a larger monitor it would force him to not be so close.

Do you have any suggestions by chance of a good monitor I should consider?

Many thanks

Seconding this entire opinion, and going to add that curved monitors are typically more expensive than their flat counterparts. This becomes especially pronounced at the >30 in. range.

Considering the CPU and GPU you're using though, I can't imagine budget restrictions are to much of an issue here. Good luck, and I'm sure your son will be over the moon with the build!

Lastly, I don't have any specific recommendations but I would highly recommend looking into Benq for your flat monitors, and Samsung for your curved ones. I found great results for both of those when I was doing research for myself!

Hey Nards, did some research for you. Take a look at the Acer XB323UGP, seems like it might suit your needs!

If looking at 30" + 3440x1440 ultrawide displays I recommend curved. It feels natural with the wider aspect ratio.

As for recommendations. What are the system specs this will be used with and what is the budget for this monitor, also location?

A larger/curved monitor improves immersion, but will decrease performance in twitch fps games and such. What price range and feature set are you looking for? Most curved monitors will be VA, and there's nothing wrong with that. Here's a very nice ips 1440p 144hz 34' LG UltraGear 34" IPS LED UltraWide HD FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatible Monitor with HDR (DisplayPort, HDMI) Black 34GN850-B.AUS - Best Buy
and a 32' va panel, but at 240hz 1440p Samsung Odyssey G7 32" LED Curved QHD FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatible Monitor with HDR (DisplayPort, HDMI) Black LC32G75TQSNXZA - Best Buy

However, these options are the highest-end you can have usually, and there's decent options for less if you're interested.

On a side note, It might not be the greatest idea ever to get your son such an expensive setup at this age, if he might take it for granted- and by extension, doesn't realize the value of what he has, or if he might not treat it well, ect. Obviously there's nothing inherently wrong about giving him a nice setup, and I can't control you, nor are you asking for life advice, but I just wanted to put that out there in case that might be an issue. If not, that's awesome- and if you just want to ignore this, that's totally fine.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Hey Brok3n But who cares?

Many thanks for your reply. The specs for the proposed build are as follows:-

Operating System

I have been told that curved is only good if you're sitting directly in front of the monitor, which my son definately won't be as he moves around a lot. I have seen an Acer Nitro XV340CK however not 100% sure what the viewing angles are like and mixed reviews on whether it is best in well lit room or not, as he will always be in a well lit room.

Hi paulland

I have seen that one too and also thought was perfect, apart from the price, I am in Australia and would like to keep the cost under $1,000, which unfortunatley this one isn't here

Hi Brok3n But who cares?

I know it's an outlay that we're not even sure of it is something he is going to continue with, however we did think of going lesser specs in the build, however didn't want to have to upgrade too soon and then pay again for upgraded components and someone to install them. So we thought we'd go big to hopefully "future proof" it a little. Also, he wants to game capture and upload to YouTube and with so much competition out there we didn't want the quality of his game play to be subpar as if no one viewed due to that then it would completely be a wasted venture. He is Autistic and actually did all the research the specs for the build himself and so we thought going "big" on the build initially would hopefully cover all bases so to speak and we can't get a come back that it was due to the quality.

Hi DailyProcrastinator

The build specs are as follow:-

CPU

Operating System

We are trying to keep the cost under $1,000 for the monitor and the mechanical keyboard is yet to be decided on.  As I said to Brok3n we went "big" to try to future proof ourselves and as our son wants to game capture, and not being very tech savvy and I have tried to get advice as to what he actually needs from our local computer store but they weren't really helpful, so he picked the components and that is what we thought best to run with as we did not want the come back from him that his game play was sub par because of the components within the build.

Unfortunately the best 34" UW monitors that are both IPS, high refresh rate, and curved are out of the price range in Australia. But this would be my first choice, and would offer the best experience.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/7Qn8TW/lg-34gn850-b-340-3440x1440-160-hz-monitor-34gn850-b

That said you can go 34" UW. But with a VA panel instead of IPS, however still curved, 144Hz, and HDR.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/gvJmP6/gigabyte-g34wqc-340-3440x1440-144-hz-monitor-g34wqc

Otherwise for a 27" 1440p IPS display consider this.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/pGqBD3/asus-tuf-gaming-vg27aq-270-2560x1440-165-hz-monitor-vg27aq

And if you want a 27" 1440p with HDR.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/bjxbt6/asus-tuf-gaming-vg27aql1a-270-2560x1440-170-hz-monitor-vg27aql1a

If you got a 27" 1440p monitor you could always get a second one that is just 60Hz, it would be cheap and offer more screen real-estate if that is something you want.

That said you can go 34" UW. But with a VA panel instead of IPS, however still curved, 144Hz, and HDR.

Otherwise for a 27" 1440p IPS display consider this.

And if you want a 27" 1440p with HDR.

If you got a 27" 1440p monitor you could always get a second one that is just 60Hz, it would be cheap and offer more screen real-estate if that is something you want.

Once again thank you for your help, the LG was my first choice too but sadly after much searching it is not available here in Oz. I did also look at the Gigabyte but the curvature radius is pretty sharp and with my son being a wiggle worm I don't think it would suit his jumpin around lol I did try to sell a 27" to him but it was a no go (he is so used to the TV when console gaming)

Have you thought about the XB321HK.

Its 32inch 4k ips monitor and it's a flat panel.

Its down side are 60hz and gsync only.

I'd just recommend a 30"+ 2560x1440 then. These are all good options:

165Hz VA panel, Freesync Premium, and HDR, only slight curvature.

165Hz VA panel, Freesync Premium, and HDR, only slight curvature. *this seems like the best option for the money*

144Hz VA, Freesync, built-in speakers, only slight curvature.

144Hz VA, Freesync, no curvature.
