Loss of connection to Internet when other computer starts, Wired connection to Router

Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6S, AC3600, model R7960P.

Both desktops using wired connections. 

Computer #1: Using Cat 5e cable in Port #1

Computer #2: Using Cat 6 cable in Port #4 (I believe)

 

Bother computers are running Windows 10 (Not sure which build #, I know it is newer than Build 1909). 

 

Both are running MSI X570 MBs, one with Ryzen 5 2600X other is Ryzen 5 3600. 

 

With computer #1 up and running, when computer #2 is started up, computer #1 will lose internet connection then re-establish connection. 

If performed in games, the disconnect is long enough to be kicked out of game. 

 

Router is running latest firmware from Netgear.

The last fix I tried was setting the computers to a Static IP address on the router. Still running into issues. 

 

I would love advice or suggestions on what to do.

Its possible its an initialization thing the router does. if it really bothers you, you could buy a network switch and plug both PC's into it so all the router sees is on device plugged in and the switch will handle the rest. Interesting problem not sure a free way to fix it. Buy hey thats technology for ya!

Have you tried looking at your PCs event log?

 

Right Click 'This PC' icon on your desktop and select 'Manage'. Scroll to 'Event Viewer' > 'Windows Logs' > 'System'

 

Most of the stuff in there is typical MS gobbledygook but it might point to a possible issue and solution. Its worth clearing the logs first then doing a restart to shorten the list.

 

You can also try Googling 'Master Browser'. I might be way off target but it could be to do with that as it sounds like both your PCs are competing over something.

 

Does it do this when one or both PCs connect via wireless?

Could it be that you have wrong network settings ? when did it start happening ?

I'll take a look at the Event Log on my PC when I get home. 

 

I don't have WiFi enabled on mine (at least I didn't turn it on.). And I just took the other one's wifi setting off (it was pulling like 6 connections to the router).

I try to keep the wifi traffic down, we already have 10 wireless devices connected as it is.

No worries,

 

A quick switch to wireless might rule out a cable / port issue so defo worth a try.

I noticed it when my son started complaining about being kicked offline in the middle of his games. 

I think it may have started when I updated my Computer (Fall 2020)

I set my system to always stay on (which I believe should be universal system setting), so it shouldn't shut off. 

 

But if coming back from Sleep mode, the same thing occurs. 

 

I will ask him to let me know when he has a break in game so I can start up.

ok. 

Computer #2 (my son's) has a MSI X570 Gaming Edge wifi MB 

Computer #1 (mine & my daughter) has a MSI X570 Tomahawk wifi MB

 

It would be funny if that is the issue. Of course then I have to figure out the port issue, or just pull out my old router and make it a dumb switch. 

 

AH WHO doesn't love networking!!! 

 

The reason I went to a static IP was that I thought maybe the DHCP setting was making it an issue.

Not set to the same. 

Comp#1 set to (.2)

Comp#2 set to (.9)

 

I was thinking they were doing that with the DHCP setting, maybe. 

Like one would start up, then the router would shuffle all the devices around.
